getting the T out this afternoon enjoying the weather running for parts, dropping off some bills @ the PO and after getting some gas I started out and the pesky key switch dropped out for a few seconds after turning on the light switch. You guys are not kidding about a backfire just once after jiggling my key and spark was restored.

Thankfully a few miles from home as it now sounded like a John Deere tractor, hope these are in stock and not on back order.

I had the same thing happen to me before. You can reshape the canister and spot weld the seam back together.

Bet that got some attention ! :o
What Denny said or just buy a new shell only.
The rest should be repairable.

Be honest. You just wanted a new muffler and had to come up with a creative way to tell the wife! 😊

If you put it back together or get a new one, have a 1/2" or so bead welded on the seam every 1.5-2" & tighten up the switch.

A buddy makes his own T muffler for his cars, uses the heavy early cast ends, and seamless thick wall tubing.

No worries blowing this guy apart ;)

Back in 1994 we had a tour "On the Border". We drove across from San Diego to Tijuana and just before we crossed the border that happened to me! So I drove it the rest of that day on "Straight Pipe". The bolt which is welded in place had broken and I went to a hardware store and bought an eye bolt. opened up the eye and put it around the piece inside, then screwed everything back together. Later after the tour was over, I tack welded the whole thing together, and now almost 30 years later it is still on my car and working fine!
I think I found out why all this happened. I had put a clamp on the pipe where it attaches to the muffler. So the muffler is bolted to the frame and the pipe vibrates with the engine as the car is driven. I find that the muffler holds up better without that clamp. Just let the end of the pipe move around inside the muffler as the car goes along.

Pulling out of a parking lot and turning right on an incline, I had the muffler pull off the pipe from the car flexing and twisting.... loud!!!

Happened to me not long after I got my speedster running. The backing plate but got loose and pretty much cut the piece of threaded rod flush with the plate. About a hundred tack welds later and it’ll probably be there for another 30 years.

I blew mine off in the Quick-Chek Parking lot. One of the gas jockeys thought a bomb had gone off. I'm sure he needed a new pair of shorts after that one.
