Can I remove the starter as a whole unit (bendix and all) through the front of the hogs head? Coil field and magnets have been removed previously and slingers installed. Removing hogs head to replace low speed shaft cams. Thanks much.

With no coil ring present, it should be OK.

Service manual breaks it down. If you are removing the HH, yes, lift up the starter side 2", comes right out. When you put the HH back on, you would want to seal the HH & install the starter with the bendix off after to get a good seal. You could try removal without lifting the HH. Let us know how it works out this way. Its a 4 screw experiment. If I remember correctly, I tried on a non field coil motor once, gave up & pulled the bendix anyway.
