So I'm trying to fit some wood in place and I see that I have to take off the big nut and top Iron support stud.
This is the nut.
Is there a way to hold this stud without having to use vice grips? I don't want to chew it all up.

Double nut it, perhaps with thin jam nuts, and that will act as a head on a bolt and things can be taken apart

Remove the cap then do a double nut on the threads. Give you something to hang on to.

If it was painted in place, suggest scoring the pant around where it meets the body so does not pull or chip the surrounding paint.

or simply saw a clearance slot into the back and slid it over/past the nut. No one will see it and it will still function fine as a tack strip

Well that worked. I used two nuts and it came right out. Then I showed my daughter that mechanical trickery.
