Hayes wire wheel questions

I recently picked up a set of Hayes 30x3-1/2" demountable wire wheels and have a couple of questions.

1) Is there any reason that small drum A/C brakes wouldn't work with them? Does anybody have A/C brake on Hayes wheels?
2) One of the hubcaps is pretty buggered up. Does anyone have any collecting dust? I'd sure like to replace at least this one!

Keith those wheels are sure pretty, which car are they going on? It was sure nice to visit with you and Yvonne at Spokane.

The Ac anchor bolt may hit the spokes as seen in this thread

Keith: Saw a speedster at a show few weeks ago that had Hayes wires and small drum brakes like AC. Worked fine. I am going to try mine soon.
Also, someone in Australia or NZ is or was reproducing the caps.

This old thread is fairly inconclusive, as the pics are of Buffalo and Simplex wires, and the Hayes reference is a curiosity.

The Hayes wire wheels have a brake drum that is integral to the rear hubs, and the inner row of spokes are laced thru the outer drum radius. This design prevents the drums from being changed to allow Rocky Mountains, and also possibly interfere with the AC bands and brackets.

I think a better question would be; “how wide is an AC brake band?” I have an off brand small drum brake set here that does not have any brackets that extend beyond the band width of 1.250”. A stock small drum is also 1.250” total width, approximately 1” of drum face and .250” of radius. How does the Hayes drum measure...?

There should be no clearance problems. The Hayes spokes are installed in an outward depression in an integral brake drum, leaving the same width of plain drum surface as there is with a standard small Ford drum. I would be looking to add some kind of 'keeper' just to make sure the external brake band cannot migrate outwards to the spokes.

Keith, the hub cap I have looks like a normal FORD one except it says HAYES on it? Is that correct or are the hubcaps like the 26-7 design with the tabs on the back? Just asking before I ship it to you?

The correct caps have external threads. The repops were cast brass, not sure about the originals...

Joe-
This is what the hubcap looks like:

Kevin-
The "flat" brake surface width looks to be about 1-3/16" then the arc of the corner starts.
