piston clearance

I just bought a set of pistons and it says 2 to 3 tho clearance, it seems tight to me ,what do you think for new pistons? MEL

Mine .004 to .005, but I usually go with the .005. That puts it in the .001 per inch of diameter.

What Mark says if the pistons are aluminum. If steel they can be a bit tighter.

It depends on condition of the block: We thermal clean the engines so they get the heat transfer. We set our cylinders to their recommended 3 thousandths clearance and have never had and issue.
