Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
My car is winterized. Now I am thinking of changing the cotton brake band. The other bands look good. They were new in 1977. Dread pulling the hogshead. Cannot get the removeable ears to release.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
After14 months without her, I took my beloved '23 Touring "Gracie" for a spin Saturday. In October of 2020 I became a member of the 2-Piece Crank Club. Innitialy the plan was to replace the crank with an "indestructable" Scat Crank. Upon tear down it was discovered the engine had many many problems needing attention. Once I got over the innitial shock, my stingy nature took a hike and I assumed the attitude "now is the time to do it right" and 'it's only money''. So I never experience this heartbreak again, I requested a complete replacement of any component that wasn't optimal. The result? I can report I've never heard a Model T run so smoothly whith incredible throttle response and a rear view mirror that actually works to boot! All I need now is for Spring to arrive 3 moths early.

John,
There is nothing like a smooth running model T. There is nothing worse than a horrible running one.
Was the block ruined and was there any warning prior to the crankshaft failure.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
While driving my 26 Coupe yesterday morning it developed a miss. I pulled the New Day timer and found a little bit of copper shavings. I cleaned that out and it did not make any difference. Shorting out the plugs, I discovered the miss to be #2 cylinder. I pulled the cover of the coil box and noticed a lot of sparking on the #2 coil points. I pulled the coil out of the box and there was something down in the bottom of the box. Turns out, it was the bottom contact from the #2 coil points. I put on a new set of points and adjusted them with my Strobospark and all is fine again!

I took Henrietta to a community gathering to honour a recently departed foundation member of our T club. In all we had a dozen or so cars in attendance, and the locals were most appreciative. He had a good send-off.

"Turns out, it was the bottom contact from the #2 coil points..." ////// I had the same thing happen. Same cylinder, but it kept firing most of the time, with high speed missing. It messed up the timer pretty good.

Made a winter front out of artist foam board based on pictures from the forum. Even at 58 degrees it only got to 170. I guess I need to cover more of the radiator.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
My neighbor across the street is a retired upholsterer and moved on to Boat?cr covers and interiors. So we made a car cover today. The material he had on hand was originally for outdoor umbrellas . Water and UV resistant. So with my assistance we/he sewed it up. Closes up like a boat cover . Turned out well, left loose in some areas so it can breath.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
Happy Holidays everyone!
I love the pictures of the T's in parades, so clever and so beautiful!!
So far this month I tried to install the drive tube to the rear end, and discovered I needed to crack the rear end halves back apart as the higher geared pinion/ring gear won't allow installation into a rear end that is bolted together. (This got slightly derailed when my finger decided to act as the intermediary between a block of wood and a big hammer) Sigh.
At the same time discovered that the rear end is too "tight" and doesn't spin freely - due to the new bronze washer - so the drive tube issue was a blessing in disguise, as I can now address the bronze washer "adjustment" so the rear end spins freely.
So much to learn!!
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!!

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
Distracted by lots of non-T activities and non-activities, I haven't had anything to report for awhile. But this week I'm getting back to work on the runabout. There's a lot to do, and spring is less than 100 days away.
Technicallly it's not part of the car, but practically it is. A couple of days ago I soldered a leak caused by the cans rubbing together. Last night I ordered some 1/16" rubber sheeting to glue on the sides to prevent any more metal-to-metal interaction.
Yesterday I got started blasting the left front fender for some body work and refinishing. It has a dent to correct. When I took it off the car I discovered another instance of parts falling off. On this year's Detroit trip I had to replace two lost coil box terminal nuts and a couple of hinge screws from the windshield frame. This week's missing part discovery is the nut from the fender bracket clamp. I'm thinking maybe I should install toothed washers.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
Progress!!
Pulled the passenger axle housing off and removed the new bronze washer. Sanded it down (through various iterations) until I had removed 9 thousands and with the gasket installed the rear end now spins freely. (Yes, it took 3 or 4 iterations until it spun freely) Bolt it on, tighten bolts, try to turn the ring gear, remove all, sand some more, rinse and repeat.
Then came the jigsaw puzzle process of setting the drive tube into the driver side housing but not bolting it, so I could insert the radius rod and put a bolt or two into it, then starting the pinion spool bolts but not tightening just yet and then setting the passenger housing into place and repeating the process for the radius rod on that side and FINALLY bolting it all together!! A ladder came in very handy to provide some support for the drive tube as I was doing the "dance of the re-assembly"
So after probably 3 months of trial and error, the rear end (Ruckstell) is rebuilt and spins freely!!
The next challenge is to get the rear end attached to the leaf spring!!

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
That should be pretty easy to do. Just loosen the nuts on the outer perches, the ones on the backing plates. That will give you plenty of slack and make it easy to attach the leaf spring.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
When I installed the Ruckstell in my 1924, I installed the spring perches onto the backing plates but left them loose so that they hung down but couldn't come completely off. Then, I supported the frame with jack stands and just put 2x4 wood blocks between the spring eyes and the axle tubes and raised the axle with a jack. The spring eyes slid along the 2x4 blocks until they were close enough so that I could insert the shackles. Once the shackles were installed, I then tightened the spring perch bolts.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
Merely took three wheels from the '25 Fordor and the brass spider to Stutzmans for new spokes and a new wood wheel rum, respectively. Beautiful day with a nice ride in beautiful Amish country. Had to stop at Guggisberg cheese factory on the way home! Pics of his area and place for anyone wanting to drive there but hasn't as yet.

You know how it is in amaish country, Dallas. You have to be very careful not to hit a deer OR the amaish. Because you can’t eat the Amish.

Say Mark, I just noticed the license plate holder attached to the rear end in your pictures. Can you please take another picture or two of how that is attached?
I might go that route on this Roadster Pickup as well unless I can come up with another way to display the plate and light.
Thanks again!

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
My starter switch was disconnected while installing new battery cables and battery cutout. I decided to remove the switch's extension cap. I hate that thing because it sticks up 2 1/2"-3" above the floor and is difficult to get my foot on it. The cap should be easy to remove. I tapped it around the bottom edge and the switch flew apart. I suppose it's time for a proper rebuild since the peening on the end of the shaft disconnected from the contacts. At least I found all of the switch parts in my cluttered shop.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
The window regulator broke in my modern work truck , so I needed the heated shop. The TT hasnt been started in two month or more. Turned fuel on, 3 priming pulles with choke on. Turned the key to battery and got a free start.
After sitting outside for 3 hours in 15 degree windchill, I didnt get a free start. About the 4th pull and it roared to life. I really should fix the starter.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
One of my current projects is installing tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and outlets for a phone charger and a navigation device in my 1915 runabout. Front signals will be in the side lamps. Yesterday I finished installing a #1156 socket in the left side lamp, and today I did the right.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
Today I made a stiff paper mock-up of a control panel to hold switches, indicator lights, and charger sockets.
That taught me what will work and what won't. Now I'm making a corrected one I'll use as a template when I cut the metal.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
I had a lot of slop in my wishbone ball. I took it out today and it wasn't really very round. I measured the new ball cap and it seemed to be 1.25" diameter so I machined a washer with a 1.25" hole, welded up the ball and filed it to fit. Not perfect, but it has no play in the socket now.

Next steps on the control panel for the tail light/turn signal/phone charger project:
Cuttng the metal.
Stripping off the plating so paint will stick.
Bending to shape.
Welding up corners. The panel and machine screws are painted and baking. Next will be assembly.

Attacked some of my anxiety and wrestled a new motor into the roadster. It should be running next week.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
Steve is that a coat hanger?
It started out as 3/32" welding rod, and I used it to make blank hangers when I had the sign business, and now it's welding rod again. This is such thin metal that I'm using a 000 tip. I used to watch a couple of my uncles do this kind of welding. I went to work with Lester when he was teaching welding at Chilocco in 1949. Clarence had a shop in town. He was in both wars. He was 17 when we got into WWI, and it was over before he could go to France. After Pearl Harbor he joined the army again, and taught welding in Hawaii. He was over 40, and the young GI's called him Pops. To get back on topic, Clarence once told me of driving a Model T to town in the spring and letting it follow ruts in the mud like a train going down a track.
The inevitable often happens.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
Mailman weather (rain, sleet and snow) is forecast for Kansas tomorrow, so I decided to take advantage of the last 60 degree day for a while and put the 15 runabout up on jacks and drain gas tank for hopefully a short winter nap for it.

It's 45* here today and no rain so I took the '27 Touring out for a nice run this afternoon. A lot of smiles and waves as I did my run. I don't have side curtains or any other accessories and I run the car all year. If it isn't raining tomorrow I will do a New Years Day run too.

Re: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR MODEL T IN DECEMBER
Steve,
I am surprised that no one mentioned you using the "wrong" hand for the torch. I'm a lefty too. When I'm using a 000 tip, I use wire welding wire as it's smaller than a coat hanger and any other wire I have laying around!
