Back in the day, you could buy the uni in pieces, ie, male and female knuckles, pin, and rings x 2. it makes you wonder why, what would be salvageable from a stuffed uni that could be repaired by just buying one piece.

Re: Different T Things
Funny thing about the U joint is that I have fixed quite successfully and used ones that looked almost that bad. The reality is that the “ring parts” actually sustain very little wear and the end pieces are not difficult to fix!!

Good advice there, it does need some shining up.
I find that it's fun to fix up coils and get them back within specs.

Used this setup many years ago to bore a rebabbited connecting rod to an odd size.
Rod was clamped to the vertical bolt.

Made a different coil box switch key to replace the lever key that gets kicked to off
sometimes when using brake.
Working on the coupe in 1976.

Re: Different T Things
A few wrong T things:
These brake drum lugs are the wrong kind of 'groovy'.
If you have run across 30x31/2 rims with the valve stem hole in the wrong place,
they could have been from 1924 Chev wheels like these.
Here's a story told by an old time mechanic from back in the day:
If you wanted to rile up a Ford owner about his Model T, you would tell him
the throttle rod was the only thing keeping the motor from falling out...
And these two pictures are...just plain wrong:

Re: Different T Things
How many Model T's have been fixed over the years with just baling wire and pliers,
and then, how about all the handy parts left when they were dismantled!
Quite a few Fords around here were made into wagons. This was my Grandpa's.
He said it was a touring car, then made into a frame car with a homemade body in the 1920's,
and was turned into a wagon in the 1930's. Still in use years later.

I have a set of those demountable disc wheels on my Racer - near as I could establish, they were manufactured by a Motor Utilities Co. who also produced bolt-on "salesman" bodies for runabouts.

I looked for info on the 30x31/2 disc wheels and could only find that Chev offered them
as an option on 1924 closed cars. Motor Utilities Co. must have been making them for Chev?
Great wheels to have on your Racer!

Re: Different T Things
best left on paper). Just bolt frames together, cut and weld the front axles, and connect the
brake lever cross shafts. Head scratching part would be how to do the rear axle. Simplest way might
be to have each engine drive only one wheel. Add auxiliary brakes. Link up the timer and
throttle rods and you're ready to go a-T-ing!
To operate, use only the driver's side pedals for low, reverse, and brake. The passenger side engine
would remain in neutral until the hand brake lever is moved forward into high gear, and at that
point both engines power the car.

That's a good one Nathan. I see that it narrows significantly towards the front. The left drive shaft doubles as a radius rod and it also has twin batteries.

Tread comparison
Long ago blacksmith made this handy T hitch.
I always look forward to 'working' in the garage. Bet you do, too.
The red car has a shortened frame of 10". The reason was I thought it made the proportions better.
Grandpa's old work bench from the 1920's is still in the machine shed and is well preserved with
soaked in motor oil. Some of that oil is from Ford repairing back in the day. With the Model T era tools
on there, it could just as well be 1925.

Well Heck, maybe it isn't all that romantic but you have to like it.
Thanks

Re: Different T Things
They are nice to have around and cheaper than axle stands.
When did I do that?

Re: Different T Things
Yes, they are indeed real useful as jack stands.
Update: Slightly disappointing swap meet season for jacks in 2022, as only three were found.
(However, one was for a TT)
I think this is a meme whatever that is.

Steve that's a good one
90+ years ago the old Ford may have traveled on many a road such as this, but not anymore.
Nowadays, the coupe's present owner completely babies it!

Re: Different T Things
Picture for fun a cylinder head cast out of gold instead of cast iron.
It weighs about 100 lbs. and is worth approximately 2.3 million.
Simmons carb and the story is that it was once fitted to a 1920's John Deere hit and miss engine.
(I bet it still missed lol)
Features an inventive way to fix the choke return.

You probably won't find a worse one, but long ago someone rescued it anyway.
Makes for interesting wall art out in the barn.

Carb inlet casting crack...
Very common, from over-tightening the fitting. I have several carb bodies with that damage.

From my experience, sometimes a 1/8-27 NPT pipe tap is useful to just 'slightly' enlarge the threads in the inlet,
and that helps to get the elbow in the correct position and avoids cracking the casting.
I've always had good luck using Permatex #2 Non Hardening Form-A-Gasket on the threads.

Re: Different T Things
No doubt it would have a loooooooong hood!
This coil set was pulled years ago from the same coil box and all four have survived in good original
and working condition. What I find interesting is that three of the four are perfect matches and it's
likely that those have been together since leaving the factory.
In the old days, if someone did not have the right size wrench, they at least had an 11/16th
hammer and chisel.

Hope this OK Nate! A little cracked like the chair.
A steering device for the ones not knowing if they're coming or going. Not as twisted tho...
Stopped at Bob's near Milan some years ago, headed north on 17 or 29 and stopped in. The fella gave this to me. I did buy an OT engine from him tho.

Re: Different T Things
"Hub Clamp" Model T Wood Wheel Puller
Here is a clamp I have designed for pulling rear wood wheels.
It is made of steel and has 2 1/8 X 24 threads to match the hub threads.
The clamp is not screwed on. Instead, the halves are placed onto the hub
and are tightened down with 1/2" fine thread allen bolts.
For now I have a 3 jaw puller that works with it.
A future upgrade may be to add a built in puller bolt to the clamp.

Re: Different T Things
Thats a fine idea.
Better than a stock, screw on type puller if the threads a a bit worn.
Consider selling some?

Re: Different T Things
Speedytinc,
I would have a clamp available for someone to help evaluate the fit on different
hubs and the overall usefulness.
There is only a 5/8" space between the back of the clamp and the hub flange, so
not all puller jaw ends will work with it. A robust puller with compact jaw ends is needed.
I am looking at ways to incorporate a puller bolt or bolts into the design to make
a self contained unit.
The goal is a tool that will pull even the real stuck hubs.

Re: Different T Things
I see the beauty in the simplicity & economy of manufacture. 5/8 is plenty of room for more period correct pullers. Thinking Proto bar type.
I could see an encapsulating housing such as a KRW type pinion puller. But that would make mfg/time cost rise exponentially.

Re: Different T Things
Hope this one is OK also. Found my new cheater pipe! Real photo. Wanted it the other way round but the steering shaft hole is too small.
A grouchy click from today as I stepped back from fighting with OT's. I put it on and thought
Cheater pipes hid while this looked at me from the corner. Test ME out.

There's still soft grease inside and wiped right off the breaker bar. Actual photo.
