Follow up to "only coils 1 and 4 firing"

Thanks to all who made suggestions as to why only coils 1 and 4 firing. Here's what I found: All wiring was new and worked fine. Thinking the coil box was the issue, I replaced it (wood was cracked and I had painted it black), using one of the new waterproof plastic boxes (nice product). Still no luck. I took off the new timer cover and discovered that the flapper was not springing. It was locked up. Reason? The cam nut was on too tight, and the pin ring was keeping the back of the flapper from returning to correct position. Ah ha! So I got that fixed and now coils 1, 2, and 4 were firing. Then I realized that the spark advance rod was contacting the terminal on top of the timer cover. So I made a bend of the rod to clear the terminal AND changed from one of the brass thumb screws to a shorter hex nut. Problem solved. FINALLY! I keep learning....
Thanks all,
John
