Model T’s in New York

Hello
I am in the process of purchasing a house in upstate New York, planning to move permanently in May or June. I have been navigating NY DMV for details regarding my Antique Vehicles but still have questions.
If anyone who currently runs a legal T on the roads in NY would be willing to answer several of questions, I would like to exchange emails.
Someone in a club that would cover Livingston County would be a huge plus!
Thanks in advance.

Relax. New York has made it pretty easy to register an antique. Go to the local DMV office and/or the state DMV website for the needed information.
The state will not issue a title, just a so-called "transferable" registration that, within the state, is as good as one, so be careful of that document; in the state's eyes, whomever's name appears in the "VEHICLE TRANSFERRED TO" section owns the vehicle, period.

If you are coming from a state that issues titles NY will untitle it as they only issue titles for 1972 and newer vehicles. I had no trouble registering a car that I bought on a transferable registration where the seller signed it over to me but I didn't register it in my name for over 10 years. Upstate DMV's are pretty easy to deal with but the idiots downstate can be a real problem if you get the wrong person.

Thank you for the replies, I am relaxed, but I still have questions, and those were not it.
There is no point in clogging everyone’s feed with one off specific questions of interest only to one person, so if someone were to make themselves available off forum, I would be grateful.
Thank you again.

I have a T licensed in NY. I have Historical plates, these have to be renewed every year. You can also get standard passenger car plates which I think normally only have to be renewed every 3 years. Some folks have year of manufacture plates. My insurance is with American Collectors.
If you have other questions please e-mail me.

Bill is right; I forgot to mention that the registration must be renewed annually, currently about $28 I think, and the car must also have a yearly safety inspection. With a historical registration, the only requirements are that all original equipment must be functional. When I bring my '14 in, all they do is look at the tires, honk the horn, and check to see that the lights are present and accounted for. The only time I have trouble is when the inspector, from habit, puts the year 2014 into the computer.

That is a real bad process for the rest of us. In Missouri it is almost impossible to title a car that has no title, so that would make cars for me from New York state almost worthless as a driver and make them just parts cars.

I live in Western New York (Rochester) and use my 23 runabout as my daily driver both night and day. Let me know how I can help. Send me an email at

When I relocated to Florida I registered all my cars in Florida and had no trouble at all. Florida, and I assume Missouri also, has to honor the ownership evidence of a sister State. They just issued new titles for each car. You get Horseless Carriage plates in Florida for a one time fee and the plates are good as long as you own the car. They also have no inspection requirements so it is a big money saver.
