Advertising and Patent Searches

Post by DontKnowMuch » Sun Jan 09, 2022 2:03 pm

I have a spot light that is shown in the pictures below and am trying to find period ads or patent information on the spotlight. It may be NOS and the only markings shown is "Pathfinder". Because of the way you can rotate the arm and move the light by pulling the handle in and out, it can be moved 360 degrees.
I searched the Forum for information on how to search early magazines for ads. I read somewhere that Google had posted early magazines online but haven't found how to search these magazines. I also looked at Google Patent but had no luck finding this spotlight.

Could someone post how to search for old advertising? Any help finding information on this particular light will be appreciated. Thanks

James,

Google does have some of the early magazines and books. And they are continuting to add more of them. Below screen shots are from and/or about Google Books:

Google books search 2.jpg
Below is from

https://www.google.com/books/edition/Mo ... frontcover

And below is from "American Motorist" Feb 1922 vol 14, pg 15:
Pathfinder - illustration.JPG
The really small print under the illustration reads:

"Here is the very latest in spotlights – the Pathfinder Innercontrol light. It is operated from inside the closed car and has so wide a range of movement that the driver is able to throw the beam directly backward as well as in every other direction without opening the window."

Note there are lots of Pathfinder spotlights as you go into the 1950's etc. but I do not know if they are or are not the same company.

Pathfinder was also the name of an automobile as well as the person who found the path for some of the automobile events. For example the Glidden Tours used a path finder to go ahead of the tour and make sure the roads and bridges were good etc. Below is a photo showing the pathfinder chopping up a large tree trunk that fell across the path. Again Google books; "American Motorist" page 207 Vol 2, 1910:

I hope that is of some help.

Respectfully summitted,

Steve,
There was a Canadian member who posted a lot of patent information. I will check with a friend in Calgary about him.

The person I was thinking of is Art Bell from the Calgary, Alberta area. I have not seen any posts from him in quite a while.

The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.
