should the bolt holding the pin rod face the front of the piston or the rear?

I think the bolt should face the cam side of the engine and instead of cotter key, wire bolt to rod.

Face the cam shaft, wiring the bolt to the rod has been known to come a drift and end up in the magneto, cotter pin or use a spring washer.

Faces the camshaft. the slot in the piston faces away from the cam. The cotter pin is placed in such a way that the folded end is against the rod so the bolt cannot turn.
