Wrap a rag around it and keep it wet with 3M adhesive remover. I have very good luck with that stuff. Darryl

Have you tried laquer thinner? Or Acetone? You need a very strong solvent to remove it. Should be doable. Maybe paint remover?

Agree with Norm, Acetone. Let it soak a little bit to soften it up and then a good sharp blade/scraper to remove the bulk, the rest should just wipe off.

WD-40 removes most adhesives. I've used it to remove ceramic tile glue from carpet as well as chewing gum. Takes tape residue off without harming painted surfaces.

I have used Naphtha to remove price tags off of the boxes of collector toys without any damage. Doesn't seam to harm anything, softens the glue and wipes off. Doesn't stain. NEED good ventilation, fumes will get to you if you hover over them too long.

This chemical is often categorized into one of two categories: aliphatic, or "light," and aromatic, or "heavy." Aliphatic compounds contain more of a chemical compound called paraffin. They are sometimes called paraffinic compounds. One common use of this chemical is as a solvent. Naptha is a very strong and versatile solvent which can be used in hydrocarbon cracking, laundry soaps, organic chemistry, cleaning fluids, and many other applications. The product also is used to make varnish and to fuel camping cook stoves and lamps, as well as in the processing of fuels such as gasoline and kerosene.

Yes that terrible stuff called gasoline would probably do it. Lacquer thinner would do it. Both are highly flammable but they work.

Like Frank said, if you have a collectible box or a valuable book that someone in the past has taped, do not try and pull the tape off. The tape will rip off the graphics that make the box, book or document, valuable. Instead, saturated the item with Naptha and keep it wet. You can soak one side of the box or document at a time and after the Naptha has soaked through to reach the adhesive on the underside of the tape, gently pull the tape off, leaving the graphics in perfect condition. Have patience. Do not try and hurry it. Any adhesive that is left can be gently wiped off until it is no longer sticky. I once purchased a 1934 Buck Rogers “Rocket Pistol” with the very rare original box. When I received it, the box was covered in tape. I used the Naptha method to remove the tape until the box was in pristine, toy museum condition and sold the box and gun for $1,200.00. Jim Patrick
