Is this an original or repro ammeter. There isn't much to a small ammeter, a case and a bezel (that the glass fits into) that is press over the case. So either the glass diameter was to small or the bezel is worn. Be careful in taking it apart.

Hmm. Thanks, I need to look closer when I get home... I was sure it came out from behind the dash. It is an original meter, I think. The only pic I have of it is when I needed to see what for key number I need..

Your meter is a reproduction, the Ford Model T meter has a wider flat-face bezel that is nickeled to engage the switch plate, plus the Ford will have script on the meter faceplate.
For the repros, those have a smaller rim or collar to encase the glass lens, you pry very gently on the locking tabs to get the collar to wiggle. Then rotate the collar to allow those tabs to clear the notches in the meter case, and remove the collar, insert the glass and install in reverse.
Comparisons, the lower left is a repro or Model A meter but I installed an original flat face collar to mimic the look of an original T Ammeter. The thin alum collars of the repro Model A style just don't look Ford T to me

Four pics I have, the gauge itself comes out the back... I'll just slide em in if I can get the correct order..

I don't know why your showing 2 glass plates - only used 1.
Also the needle pivot appears to be on top instead of the bottom to match the face plate.

Once you remove the ammeter, pulls out through the front of the face plate, the vacated space should look like the one I added. It looks liek you have an extra bezel - may explain what the problem is.

Your ammeter is a repro

Putting things back together. I have taken a repro ammeter apart. just the 4 pieces.
First you need to notice that the bezel has a small indent for the tab on the face plate to fit into.
--
--
1: place the bezel face down on a flat surface with the indent at 12 o'clock
2. place the glass into the bezel
3. place the face plate into the bezel on top of the glass with the tab in the indent of the bezel
4. place the body of the ammeter into the bezel such that the tip of the needle is at 12 o'clock and the pivot id at 6 o'clock
....... secret to align the 1st time. make a mark on the top edge of the body where the top of the needle is. Use that mark to align it ti the indent of the bezel
5. push down to lock things in place.-
--
To insert into switch plate,. There are 4 tabs, along with the bump from the indent, on the ammeter bezel that align with cutouts on the switch plate cutouts. just press it in those tabs just need to spring out a bit to catch the faceplate.

Thank you so much. I did put it back together, nice detailed instructions. However, something strange is going on. If you look at my first photot the faceplate does not have the ford script on it.. My second photo of the parts the faceplate does have ford written on it... And two glass pieces , that is really strange

Good have happened when someone took the old face plate and bezel and put it on the repro case. Anyway did you use the flat bezel on the case and how did you secure it?

I used the flat bezel that was on the case in the photo. Actually I didn't remove it. I stuck everything in from the back. When I used one glass instead of two it seemed to click in and fit nicely, we'll see if it stays. From the back I put in the glass, the face plate, the brass washer, and then the meter..

To my knowledge there was no brass washer or gasket used - but if it stays in place leave it be
