I Was Surprised To See This

I was surprised to see this much felt packing in the two pack nuts. It was very difficult to remove. This may not be unusual, but thought I would show it anyway.

I also show a piece of new felt packing that was in a gasket kit I purchased. I am not going to use it but instead will purchase a neoprene seal.

I was curious about how the felt piece would fit onto the gas line and then into the nut. I tried to put it onto the gas line, but the hole in the felt is way too small for it to fit. The felt is dense enough that I could not enlarge the hole. Any comments on how these felt gaskets are installed?

Slide the nut on the line, completely soak the felt in motor oil, slide it on the line, bring the nut to the felt then using a blunt piece of steel or wood, stuff the felt into the nut enough to get a few threads started "straight" then tighten it up !

Run a proper sized Phillips screwdriver into the packing hole to enlarge it a bit then manhandle the felt onto the gas line after the fitting goes on first. Then use a tiny regular screwdriver to force the packing into the fitting.

Throw the felt in the trash can and use a piece of neoprene gas line instead of the felt.
