A fellow I met said he had put 1919 intake on his 1926, what is special about that

I can’t think of anything. Perhaps his 26 had the “vaporizer” carb, but then he would have to change the exhaust as well. Now a 13 intake manifold does provide some advantages!

Les, I agree. A 13 intake, besides being aluminum does have better air flow, but have you even seen a 14 intake? They are cast iron, apparently cast in the same molds as the 13's. I have one.

They are out there Terry. I have them on my 1924 tourer and my 1917 shooting brake. Mine are in bare iron to look like the later choked version. They can be painted silver to emulate an earlier alloy one.

Are the aluminum intakes in demand or hard to find?

This is my 1914 iron intake manifold cast using the mold for the Aluminum intake manifolds.
Yes, a previous owner added the priming cup.

I had no idea Ford made a high volume cast iron intake.
I haven't given a cast iron manifold for sale a second look for many years.
Now everybody who walked by old cast iron intake manifolds at swapmeets
will be picking them up to see if they might be a high volume version......I
certainly will be doing so.

Mark, original aluminium intake manifolds are scarce, but not as scarce as the cast iron equivalents. I took the repaired one off my 1912 van when I eventually found a cleanskin original. Mine had had an extra air butterfly fitted, and I had the two holes welded up when I first fitted it in 1994.

There is a reproduction aluminium manifold available, but it takes some fettling to make it fit in some instances.

Bill, I have one of those in my cabinet, always wondered what year it was, was thinking it had to be around the time they switched to cast from aluminum since the runners are so much larger like the aluminum ones.

While this post is not directly related to the topic, can anyone tell me how you determine the difference between High Volume Intake Manifolds from the standard intake manifolds?

Dom, check out the hole at the carb flange end. The difference is easily noticeable. With the more restricted later cast iron manifolds, that hole is always chamfered from the carb flange face into the smaller cast hole in the runner. The high volume aluminium and early cast iron manifolds do not have this chamfer, as the hole is large at the flange face and this continues into the runner, so the machining operation to create the chamfer is not needed.
If you can get them side by side, the high flow manifold is bulkier looking. If you put your index finger up the two holes you can certainly feel the difference. Watch out for venemous critters on the second check!

I have 4 or 5 of the cast iron high volume intakes. They are usually cheap at a swap meet but the odds are against you finding one.

Yes, one of those things I keep an eye out for. Got a 5-gallon bucket of them given to me, nope, none, nada!

Another question - why did Ford do away with the high volume intakes in later cars?

these should be right with no chamfer.
