A long number of years ago I remember the late great Ted Aschman had a hint about replacing the mounting blocks on the oil pan ears with springs. I did this on my 22 center door and it worked very well, but that car is long gone to Ron Kipling and then from his estate on to others. I looked in my copies of Ted's Tinkerin Tips(both volumes) and in my Vintage Ford on CD and can't find the reference. Can't remember which T springs(valve, wishbone socket, radiator ?) were used for this. Does anyone know which volume of VF this was in. Want to use it in my 1919 roadster build.

Wish bone & radiator are the same spring. Thats the ones to use. I do the same upper pan ear mount.

Thanks John, as I remember now that you jogged me, it was the radiator setup so you could adjust from above. Wish someone would reprint Ted's works there was a lot of info that I have long forgotten contained in them, every time I pick them up.

Haven't used another system other than the Ford wood blocks and proper bolts to secure the top flange and the long bolt to keep the ear from spreading.....but if you want to re-engineer Henry, here is a sketch.

In my opinion, not everything Ted suggested was necessarily a good idea. I would not do such a modification.

I think the idea is to prevent broken pan ears. The horizontal bolts are pinned loose & the top bolts get tight & pinned per stock. Using the spring on the top bolt takes out the rigidness. The spring makes a snug, but not tight attachment allowing for some flex. On the roads we drive today, it probably makes no difference.

Steve, It was not the Gray Ghost. Ron already had that as his driver/tour car. The center door I sold him actually did come from originally and he had given it to his neighbor in payment for helping building the big barn at his place. The sheet metal was good on the car and I re-wooded it and did a full restoration. It had some of the original upholstery and I sent those off to Vince Iaccino who did a interior kit for me as at that time there were no center door kits available. Interesting is that the original was quit ornate and Vince did his best to do it justice. I sold the car back to Ron in 2007 after my wife died as that car and her 1970 E Type Jag were her daily drivers. If you had ever been to Ron's place, there was a lot of good things in that barn. I never got notice of his passing, but he was quite a guy.

this car is still in the totally in pieces stage, just finished blasting and painting the frame, so just trying to gather some thoughts.

FWIW, I found an old mud flap and cut squares off, drilled a hole in the center and insert them between the frame and pan ears. They’re very heavy duty, thin and absorb a lot of vibration.
