Thanks for the comment. We all bring our own talents and foibles to the hobby That is what make it interesting. The cars have their own foibles. Too many cars have created some neglect for me, but I take seriously the ones about to go on a long trip. The Coupe has need of some attention to the throttle play. It has a lag from slow idle to fast speed. This results in stalling and racing the engine. It too will get some attention when the warmer weather arrives.
I took it to lunch for a juicy burger. Then checked the gas in the tank. We don't often mention the subtle smells enjoyed in T ownership, but the right mix of hamburger on one's fingers and gasoline cannot be overstated. When my grandson opened the garage door and said "It smells good in here" I realized he was exceptionally blessed with the model T disease. Rotting upholstery, seasoned gear oil, fresh wood shavings, cleaning solvent and even car exhaust can take us to some pretty wonderful places if only we will let them.

You may have your own favorites.

The canvas tent Dad bought after the War, on a warm August afternoon in the Sierra Nevada, a blend of canvas preservative, pine, and Douglas fir. The visual is tiny dust sparkles in a shaft of sunlight.

Mowing alfalafa.

The heavenly aroma when the Helms driver opens those rear doors.

On a day like today, with a ground blizzard howling, perhaps it's best to take a "joy ride" of imagination in the garage ? Odors can definitely evoke pleasant memories and associations. Years of cohabitation with canines has taught me that we humid beans don't utilize or enjoy our sense of smell (weak as it is) near enough both for enjoyment as well as to perceive our environment.

Any model T will reek of gasoline no matter how well the system contains it. I'm pretty sure it's why the Indians in Montana called the first automobiles "skunk wagons". The scent of gasoline has changed over the years, but still imparts ambience to garages where Model Ts reside.

Nice March day in South East Texas. Gathered up three cars from the Space City T's and did a one-day tour around Willis, Texas. Great fun.

"It smells good in here" Rich E, your grandson IS a kindred spirit. You can't teach them that. Steve, The smell of hot, oily canvas is rare these days with tarps and tents made of synthetic material. It also takes me back to childhood camping trips.

In the 50's and 60's, my uncle who lived two hours away Had a salvage yard and bought and sold all kinds of cars. Once he parked a T in our driveway for about a week until he could come pick it up. When it was gone, I could stand where it was parked and still smell it. Or so I thought. :)

John, you probably smelled the oil which had dripped out while it was parked!

There was a special odor in wood floor, screen door buildings too.

And the oiled sawdust swept across the floors to pick up dust.

Every generation knows familiar things that people who come after them will never experience. Grandma knew how it felt to ride the first Santa Fe train into Arkansas City in 1881, to go by buggy to a dance at Magnolia Ranch, crossing the Walnut River at Nipp's Ford before there was a bridge, to light kerosene lamps with a taper. My dad knew what it was like to be a boy in a little country town with its first car, to see the first airplane there, to see President Taft campaigning from the back of a railroad car. I can imagine those things, but I can never know how it felt to be there. I know how it feels to go to a matinee (for 25¢) and see two feature films, half a dozen cartoons, a couple of short comedies, an adventure serial, and a newsreel; to go home and turn on the radio and hear hours of drama, variety, and comedy; to ride an interurban trolley to the big city. You can read about those things, watch old films, and listen to old recordings. But if you weren't there you can never know how it felt to live in a world where they were daily life.
The inevitable often happens.

After 60 years, I should have all my cars starting easily every time. Not so. I got a surprise today. The '09 hasn't been run since last fall. I expected to have to jack up a wheel and choke it to run. Just for fun, I pulled once on the crank without a choke or jacking and it sprang to life. I couldn't believe it. That has never happened that cold in any of my T's that I can remember. At the gas station it gave me a free start after the fill-up, so that is a quarter turn for the whole trip.
The experts can tell me why, but it is all a big mystery to me. They never seem to start the same way twice or how I expect them to. There are too many variables, and my mind gets foggy now.
There were several waves and smiles from pretty, young biker chicks and cute girls in passing cars. That also made the trip fun.

"I think the 09 likes you Rich !"
Yes, Dallas, I thought that until this morning. 30° or 40° cooler and it took a dozen pulls, two of them choked, to get it to fire. And jacked up. The wise thing to do is only start it at 80°. It did start with one pull after breakfast.
I hope to put the 5-ball on today. It will be a treat or disaster. If I survive, I will report on that.

We didn't drive the Ts enough this Summer. Getting them out any chance we get now seems like a good idea before the air gets cold and the birds start falling off the trees.
Shopping.jpg
Today, I took the girls to breakfast and then the fabric store, beauty shop and a craft fair. They could shop till their hearts delight, while I sat in the T. The warm sun and cool breeze were perfect. I got more than my share of nice comments and free starts.
Life is good.

Free starts when you were out for a ride? There must not have been many people watching.

All of my free starts happen at home. I find that the amount of cranks it takes to start my T’s is proportional to the amount of people standing around watching!

About 45 minutes of shopping is good for a free start. One of them didn't happen until I slid across the seat to get out. I'm not sure why the delay but I'll take it.

We were fortunate enough to have a flat tire on Joy's EcoSport this morning and needed to drive the Touring to breakfast and other errands. It was cool enough for jackets, but the T started on the third pull after tickling the 5-ball. We got 3 free starts and only had to pull once more on the crank. What a car. Trees are starting to turn color.
EN569.jpg
We can't find a spare wheel for the EcoSport for less than $241. The spray in gew is disappointing too. We will check junkyards today. 4 flats in the last year required towing or several trips back and forth. It's a special bolt pattern for some reason. New Cars!
Makes the T all the better.

A treat to see, Rich ! New cars ?? Pure aggravation. It's why I'm taking pains to return Lizzie to robust good health. Reliable transportation is a necessity ! ('course we always have the horses ! 😉

Shop time is part of the journey before we get back to the joys of joy-riding !

Joy said all she wanted for Christmas was a Model T ride. What a Gal! It's a bit tougher getting in and out of one for us now. Condensation and low fuel level left the Tudor unstartable. It seemed like a herculean effort to crawl under in the cold and drain some water out of the carburetor. It was possible and I found a gallon of good gas to add. What a treat to drive down to the river where the trees were covered with frost. There were lots of waves and smiles from passersby. Just delightful.

Per Rich's "water woes" stated above...this is why in winter I keep the tanks filled right to the threads of the filler opening and put StaBil in before filling and also run the engine a few minutes to get the stabilized fuel into the carb. Even then I shut fuel off at the carb and still drain it but if theres the least little bit of fuel left in the carb at least maybe its not gonna go bad this way. Never have any problems this way. Yes this is my winter layup procedure but of course would help if one still drives the T off and on all winter. Just a thought.

Thanks guys. My solution this time is to fill the tank with Non-Ethenol. Otherwise, I drain the tank and leave the petcock open. I bought some StaBil 20 years ago but don't know if it is still good. Is there something to put in it?
