I am looking for a couple of examples of original K.R. Wilson W-34 Differential Holding Plates. In particular I am looking for details of the mounting holes where they would mount to the bench top. I have only been able to find a couple of photos (and catalog illustrations) but none focusing on what I am looking for. I am hoping that one or two people might have an original holding plate that they might be willing/able to share some photos of. Thanks for your time and help. it is appreciated.

If you are just making one to hold the rear end, not sure how the photos will help because you could put the holes anywhere along the back edge away from the area where the axle sits. maybe this will help, here is a link to the one sold by Lang's and others;

I am trying to figure out if any of the original K.R. Wilson W-34 Holding Plates had the 3 countersunk mounting holes, as shown in the 1926 catalog, or was this just an artistic license/interpretation or had they not settled on the finished design yet?


The photo that John had posted a link to from the K.R Wilson tool website I have seen, and that one does not have the 3 countersunk mounting holes (but that is 1 example). Ignore the price, it has been sold.

The reproduction that is being made and offered for sale by the different vendors has the 2 mounting holes (1 less than original) moved in location versus the original and they are not countersunk.
So that is why I am looking for some photos of original K.R. Wilson W-34 Differential Holding Plates. I have only been able to find the one example of an original fixture and would like to know whether there was some type of a design change between what was shown in the catalog and was actually sold. Or is the image in the catalog just a "representation" of an earlier design that was changed to remove a machining operation (lower production cost). Someone out there has to have another one.

I own the exact plate that was on the KRW site. Pretty much what you see is what you get. I would be surprised if you ever find a copy of the one in the illustration. Given that it is a casting, I doubt that any patternmaker would make a pattern with the name of the product on any surface that had a draft angle and needed to be released from the cope and drag. Similarly, we know errors were made on the 1909 illustrations of Ford's first cars in their literature. Sometimes the info doesn't get from engineering to marketing, and sometimes the new kid in the illustrators' dept just doesn't know.

In any event, I am much happier with large straight holes to accept 3 lag screws rather than some long wood screws in a counersunk hole.

Just out of pure curiosity, why is this such an interesting detail?

Just trying to rectify what I had seen and remember from 60+ years ago versus what I see today.
