Ruckstel problem

Are the early Hall shifter housing interchangeable with the later style Ruckstel shifter ? I’m following the very little instructions from the MTFCA booklet, making sure the shifter is in Ruckstel low. I rebuilt the late shifter. When I installed on the axle housing I can’t get it to snap over like it should. It does go a little but the slightest touch will cause it to fall back. I put the rebuilt shifter in a vise as per the booklet and adjusted it till the snap felt good. The car is a 27 Roadster

It’ll take lotsa grease on the innards and will snap over easier...

The gear splines all have to be lined up before the sliding clutch will allow full engagement. In other words, these are not static shifts like a normal say 3 speed. The later long nose type, allows you to shift, then when everything is in alignment, the spring loaded part finishes the shift. The old style works some what the same, but you are doing the shifting when everything is alignment.

Mark, will a simple turn of the rear wheel help line everything up ? Sorry to ask dumb question’s but I’ve never messed with a Ruckstel. Thanks

It might or maybe a little more. Give it a try. Not an expert either but that much I have picked up on the couple I have worked on.
