Has anyone replace transmission spring without pulling the engine. I have heard you can pull the rear end, would the hogs head have to be removed? If you have done this I would sure like your opinion, pull the engine or not. Thanks Sam

It can be done but is not easy and can be a bear to do. If your spring is broken, the removal should be easier than the installation, so perhaps it will only be 1/2 of a bear or perhaps a bear CUB. Compressing the spring, lining the coils up to put the pin in is the trick.

Do it and come back and let us know if you're willing to do it again!

Page 139. Beginning at paragraph 547 thru 561. Not one of the easier jobs to do but probably done this way at Fords service centers back in the day.

Referring to your related posting on your clutch problem, have even positively determined that the spring is broken? The spring retainer can also break, which could also the cause of your trouble. This why I suggest you post a photo of what you're seeing with your trans cover removed.

I would pull the hothead first and get a good look at things to really locate the problem. I have heard of folks removing all than bolts and leaving a couple connected loosely in the front and lifting the rear of the engine- transmission so they could do work on the transmission.. Seems it would be easier to pull the engine and be able to work on it out in the open and not fight working in a confined space inside the body.

It was not the spring after all. I had to adjust the
fingers twice and finally got a high gear and good neutral. Thanks guys for your time and info.

I believe I once saw a comment by Royce that he had replaced a spring through the back, with the engine in the car, and would never do it again.

"Tinkering Ted" Aschman has a procedure in one of his two books on how to replace that spring without removing the engine.
