I attempted to pull down the shade today and there was no resistance or recoil. I dismantled the shade return shaft and found that the dowel at the center of the spring had broken at the pin. I am in the process of repairing the dowel but I need to ask about where the spring end attaches. Does it thread through the two metal openings just inside the metal end where the dowel attaches? Thank you. Jim Patrick.

I'd just replace the entire unit. Several types available at Lang's. Here is an example of just some of them.

Well, I tried to glue it with yellow wood glue, but with so much oil saturated into the wood and dry rot, the glue did not take, so, I bought a 3/8” diameter dowel and replaced the old broken dowel with a new one. Better than new. As I suspected and in answer to my original question, the end of the spring hooks into the metal loop just under the shade mechanism, providing the recoil for the shade, as the end turns separate from the dowel, applying tension to the spring, the more it is turned. Jim, I've got to hand it to you; You deserve an Oscar for some of your "fix it" ideas.

Thanks Terry. In this hobby, when hard to replace Model T parts get irreparably broken, it sometimes helps to be somewhat inventive. Jim Patrick

Here you go, Jeff. There are four parts:
1. The hollow metal shade tube.
2. The spring recoil mechanism.
3. One end bracket with a rectangular hole for mechanism.
4. One end bracket with a round hole.
