Gas Line Shut Off Valve

Refer to the third photo in KBorket's April 11 post in "What Have You Done to Your Model T in April". In this photo, there is a shut valve in the gas line between the sediment bowel and carb. Why is this needed when the gas can be shut off at the sediment bowel?

It is common to install the valve near the carburetor so it can be operated without having to crawl under the car. If it is elsewhere in the line, I would suspect the original valve was leaking into the line. On the 26-27 the tank is in the cowl and the valve is under the hood so you don't need the extra valve.

Not too unusual to have that 'extra' shut-off on the Improved Car.

Have one on my touring, reason is sometimes the original cowl tank mounted sediment bulb valve is worn, and can't do a pristine job of closing off and preventing leaks there. So......added the good shutoff that works. Simple solution to a sediment bulb issue. :)

All cars before 1926 along with fordors and TTs: The extra shutoff valve is installed under the hood close to the carburetor for quick access and also to prevent the carb bowl over filling because of stuck float valve in bowl while in storage. I am more concerned with safety than originality so have been installing the modern 1/4 turn ball valve type on any car I now install one in.

It is not very unusual for the under seat gas tank sediment bowl shut off valve to remain in the open position... for whatever reasons. . Mainly not having a tool to turn the valve, or a lack of a blanket to crawl under to shut the valve off. Valve placement just before the carburetor connection assures gas flow stoppage, but from the valve to the tank connections must be checked for no leakage at all. A lot of times the cast metal valve handle at the under seat sediment bowl will break off.

This is the type of gasoline filter/shutoff valve you should have on your Coupe. This one is missing the shutoff handle. You can see the handle in Dan Treace’s above photo. Jim Patrick
