Windshield glass

Post by Craig Leach » Thu May 19, 2022 2:45 pm

Wayne is having trouble finding anyone that will cut & install early ford windshields for his 12 & 14 T's. Everyone he has been sent to is either out of business or no longer provides the service for flat glass. Does anyone know of someone in the Austin Texas area that will do these.
Thanks.
Craig.

I am close to Waco, Texas and I had Freddy’s auto glass in Waco cut and install the windshield glass in my 21 T touring windshield frame. I installed the windshield back on the car myself. It’s not hard to do.
Austin is about an 1 1/2 hr. drive or so from Waco.
If he’s interested he could take some pics on a phone and message or text them to him to see if they would do it. They specialize in auto glass but also do other glass applications besides autos. Call them first and tell them before you send any pics. They have been in business for many years and have a good reputation in this area.

Hotrodders/streetrodders and custom body and paint shops that cater to them usually know who does flat glass in town - at least that is the case here in the Twin Cities.

So, if you have been limiting yourself to getting referrals from stock antique car owners and restorers, talk to the above for referrals.

I’d recommend Thad Ziegler Glass in San Marcos TX. Its about a 2 beer drive south of Austin. They furnished the windshield glass on my ‘11 Hupp (brass frame) so they know how to cut flat on a radius. And I’d take the w/s frames to them for the best job...🇺🇦
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people 🤪

Or if you have the old glass you can take it to the shop and have them match it.

I get Model T windows cut at the local glass shop. I'm astonished that Austin, with a population 32 times the size of the little county where I live, doesn't have a shop that can do a simple job like cutting a couple of pieces of flat safety glass. Did you inquire at the dozen or more auto glass shops in Austin?
The inevitable often happens.

Check out www.streetrodglass.com in Austin. These folks and a several others do old car and custom auto glass. According to the website flat glass is available and that’s one of their specialties.

Looks like Freddy's in Waco is the solution to Wayne's glass problem. George isn't that distracted drinking? :)
Thanks everyone.
Craig.

Laminated Safety glass comes in 1/4” thick sizes which will not go into the channel with the usual gasket. Original glass thicknesses range from 3/16” to 7/16”. I discovered this in 1971 when I was unable to fit the piece of 1/4” laminated glass into the windshield frame channel of my 1926 coupe. I wound up centering the glass into the frame and caulking around it on both sides of the glass with black silicone rubber. Worked great and can’t be distinguished from the original way it as done. These days it would be “Ultra Black”, or the “Right Stuff”. Jim Patrick
