Upholstery

Post by johnernst » Fri May 20, 2022 1:00 pm

I am wondering if someone can be of help on this

I have a 1922 Canadian Touring. Before I start the upholstery do I need to add the wood trim around the top edge of the seats. It already has the plastic trim installed as per my pics but Im not sure if I need to build or buy the wood rails and attach them.

I checked Fordwood.com and the 1917-22 doesnt show the wood trim but the 1923-25 shows it

I did on my '14. It seemed like it should be there.

I hope others will give their views.

I have a 21 USA touring and I remember using the plastic tack strip around the top of the seats. That was on the outside but I can remember anything for the inside. Not sure if I did or didn’t.
www.Classicwoodproducts.com also sells the wood kits for T’s and also the separate tack rails.
They have and explanation about them but no pics. That might help and I wish I could be of more help about the inside pieces and sometimes I think I should have taken pics of what I was doing.

After looking at some other threads that show no inner wood and looking at a body and the carriage bolts that hold the outer strip, they look too short to have both inner and outer strips.

My conclusion is that if the body has a bent over lip as yours and the one pictured that no inner wood was used. Later, '23-'25 bodies had heavier inner wood and no outer strip. They don't have the bent lip. My earlier '14 body doesn't have the bent lip so it needs the double wood there.
I'm offering my ideas as nobody has given more positive info. I hope I am understanding your question. If I'm way off base disregard these comments.
Thanks
Rich

Rich I think your right! The rear section of my 21 still had the top irons still on it and had those same length bolts. They were just long enough to go through the outside trim piece and that was it.
The body sat outside for over 40 years and of course the wood was long gone.

I also used a Fordwood kit and bought the plastic outside trim rails. It seemed flimsy at first since that was all was holding the top iron bracket but after all things went together it was pretty firm.
As the old saying goes. “ A piece of metal and a piece of board put it together and you’ve got a Ford”. 👌

Ok as usual so helpful. I think thats correct to just have the plastic trim around the outside edge of the seats. Many thanks to everyone who replied.

John
At the time I put my 21 together Snyder’s had the exact carriage style seat trim bolt kits. The ones that were on the remains of the 21 body were pretty much rusted through. The repos were very nice. Hope this helps.
