Exhaust rings for different car

Post by Linus Tremaine » Sun May 22, 2022 5:05 pm

I have a 1921 studebaker and it uses the spring steel rings between the block and the manifolds. I found that some of mine were missing and I wonder if there is a general source that makes these for model T and other cars. Does anyone know where I might find some?

Thanks

The rings are not spring steel. They are a strip of soft sheet metal of the proper length & width that when bent into a circle fit motor & manifold recesses. The better rings are made of tubing machined to the proper dimensions. You can make your own of either type easily yourself. If not, a machine shop could do the job cutting some tubing rings.

I just cut them from sheet. John is right. If you had the right size tubing that would be better.

When did I do that?

Or make them from a short piece of exhaust tubing/pipe.

Continuous rings cut from exhaust pipe tubing are better. Thew will not deform like the strip type nor give grief when fitting the manifold. Also, if you do not have a source for gasket rings, they can be cut from any exhaust gasket material. When I built the header for my speedster, I cut six rings, already formed, from a gasket to suit a modern 6 cylinder car. Just see your parts house to find one for your purposes.

Hope this helps.

Restoration Supply has the copper crush rings in various sizes- see page 45 of their catalog.
