beautiful wood......

Post by NU2theT » Thu May 26, 2022 8:26 pm

Waiting for me when i got home, thanks to Calimers wheel shop. Now I would like to stain these black, what have you guys done that finishes well, oil/water based ect.

I am looking @ a pre-stain water based wood conditioner and then applying a water based wood stain Varithane. Any input would be great, thanks in advance.

Never heard of anyone using a black stain. I see it does exist. I would use an oil base, not water base.
Please let us know how it turns out.

I too would not use water based products. For a black stain Burger in Spokane made his own brew for his well used truck. Perhaps he will chime in with his process. I treat all new wood with Penetrol, whether it is to be painted or clear finished. It penetrates the wood, seals it and makes a good key for any subsequent finish.

Check out the below thread from 2015 when I respoked my right front wheel: “Www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/179374/186068.html”. It still looks as good as it did when applied 7 years ago. Jim Patrick
