From Mike’s website

The I-Timer is 6-12v DC only.

Then here are the voltage requirements for the E-Timer.

I was thinking of convenience, I always have charged dewalt batteries around. If it was safe to use I could just throw one in the car for a spare.

A local t guy used to run a 13 roadster on a makita 9.6v battery on 1 tour he made it 1/2 way, maybe 80 miles, but didnt bring a second to make it home. Thats a normal timer T.

Sorry for the delayed reply, very busy lately. The E-Timer was designed to operate on 6V to 12VDC. It will accommodate battery charging to 14V maximum. Had an incident where an alternator VR went bad and the output voltage exceeded 15V that damaged the E-Timer.

The E-Timer operates very efficiently, a small 9V transistor radio battery powered it for almost an hour. It's difficult to say with certintity how long a particular battery will last without charging without additional information. A new 6V or 12V car battery will likely last a week of touring 3-4 hours a day (no head light usage) without recharging but I don't have solid data to back that up, perhaps someone else does. Certinally will last all day then can echarge over night to ease concerns.
