Which is better plug

Post by Emeraude » Sun Jun 26, 2022 12:15 am

I am going to buy a new set of plugs for my 21 that has a surging problem. I,m not sure if the plugs are the problem but where they look old and rusty I plan to replace. Lang’s champion 25 at$14.50 and motorcraft at $4.50
Should I go with champion and is it worth the extra money?

Autolite 3095 from your local parts store for about $12 a set will get you by while you hunt down some original Champion X or other T era plugs on eBay or at swap meets. There are many Model T plugs — Behtlehem, Wards, Splitdorf, Horseshoe, Firestone, Edison, and dozens of others. Of course you can buy new Champion X for only $144 a set, but good originals are better and can be found for under $10.
The inevitable often happens.

Best price on plugs has been RockAuto and their service is great. X's are just $27.79

In my mind a spark is a spark is a spark. I have Motorcraft plugs and Champion 25’s in my 3 T’s. Autolite work fine too.
If you like to be authentic use Champion X’s.
They all work fine in for me.

I have had best performance out of Champion X plugs. Autolites will not allow my Roadster to idle without a miss. Smooth as silk with Champion X's.

I agree that Champion X spark plugs are the best and most reliable, but it is historically interesting to see a T with Edison #14 spark plugs and Firestone parts that demonstrate how Ford and two of his best friends Thomas Edison and Harvey Firstone were not only friends in private, but were also affiliated with and supported eachother in business. Over time the threads of the spark plug hole may restrict the plug from being properly positioned depth wise. Carbon, sealant etc.
Looking at the plugs there is a definite difference in the spark position past the threads. This may have an effect on each cylinder's performance and may account for plug preferences. viewtopic.php?t=17517

I believe the plug with the spark gap set lower, or further into the chamber, would perform best in a Model T. Getting the spark a little farther from the relatively cold head surface and a little farther into the fuel/air mixture would facilitate ignition and good flame propagation. The plug might also run a little bit cleaner, since the spark gap and insulator tip would be more nearly in the direct path of the incoming charge and it would probably run a little hotter. The deeper set plug would also slightly reduce combustion chamber volume, which improves power and efficiency.

Seems a lot of engines differ. Most of mine were/are on X's and run great. My former '15 absolutely hated X's but ran great on 25's. Go figure.

I have one car that likes Motorcraft but not so much the Champion 25’s. So I put the 25’s in my 24 Coupe and it runs fine. 🤔

I want to state I'm no purest. My first T ( a speedster project ) had a distributer when I purchased the engine because because the mag was damaged. It also had modern spark plug adaptors. I run autolite #66 plugs and have never had a issue with them. However they are not very original looking ( not that a distributer is) I was looking for some good original plugs when I found that broken or damaged plugs are anywhere between free & a $1 each.
So I take early plugs machine the crimp off to remove the porcelain the counter bore and thread them for 14mm plugs to make a adapter out of them
when the plug is screwed in they are hardly distinguishable from original plug and they or a similar plug of other makes are cheep and available at most auto parts stores if you needed them.
Just my $.02
Craig.
