Thanks to the forum I found that Tom VanMeeteren is able to supply cap, rotor and points for my AK type RA distributor. The cam gear that came with the unit has no slot or locating hole to position it correctly. The distributor sits slanted. I have attached a couple of pictures of the unit. I could find no markings on the plate, just the Type RA on the distributor head. The suppliers list three different AK gear sets. Obviously the vertical shaft option is not correct, so does anyone know if the type LA has a vertical or slanted shaft?

Other option is any help on how to correctly locate the gear that came with the unit on the shaft.

I believe the cam gear you show is the correct one. I'm pretty sure the LA unit is the clip-on style, and not the front plate type that you show.

Thanks Jerry, do you know how the cam gear is held in the correct position, ie for/aft and rotational. There is no slot or pin hole in the gear.

The drive gear should locate against the shoulder on the cam nose. The gear does not require a pin or slot to locate it or drive it. The torque from the timer brush nut and washer is sufficient to drive the distributor. The original gear did not have a hole or slot. You can confirm that the centerline of the drive gear is in the correct position by using a straight edge against the front of the block and then measuring the same dimension to the center of the dist shaft on the front cover.

Dan, one more question, my gear is original and one end has a slight bevel on the edge of the bore, the other end is flat. Does it matter which direction it goes on the cam?

Probably put the beveled bore end toward the shoulder on the cam so that the bevel clears any slight radius on the cam. pretty sure that they used the stamped steel washer under the nut same as when using a timer brush.

Hi Jim,
As far as fore & aft spacing I usually put the gear on with the nut loose so you can spin the distributer turning the gear freely on the cam to check the gear mesh & spacing.
