Protecting polished brass

Post by jiminbartow » Thu Jun 30, 2022 10:46 am

For members who own brass era Model T’s and members who enjoy restoring antiques with polished brass parts, the subject of polishing and protecting polished brass comes up often on the forum.

Though I don’t have a brass era T, I have been collecting and restoring antiques for 55 years and until recently, have not been able to find a good protective spray-on lacquer to protect the polished brass. It has always changed the color of the polished brass or dulled the polished brass, or left tiny bubbles or a fogged surface.

Recently, I tried a spray-on lacquer that is the best I have ever found. “Mohawk Brass Pritectant Lacquer by Behlen”. It sprays on beautifully and does not change the appearance of your polished brass in any way, except to harden into a crystal clear finish that protects the finish from dulling, or discoloring. It couldn’t be any clearer if sprayed with water.

I have posted a picture of an antique solid brass clock that I polished with Maguiar’s rubbing compound and sprayed with the Mohawk brass protectant lacquer which I have also included a photo of. Examine the clock closely and see how reflective the polished brass shows through the crystal clear lacquer and you will understand why I recommend it so highly. Jim Patrick

PS. I purchased it from “www.woodcraft.com”. Type “Mohawk brass lacquer aerosol” in the search box.
