Looking For Drive Pins For Pasco 60 Spoke Wire Wheels

Post by Southfork Creek » Mon Jul 04, 2022 2:44 pm

I am getting close to completing a set of five Pasco 60 spoke wire wheels and I'm looking for the drive pins, or maybe they are called pin drives. I need 30 of them for the five wheels. I have 18, but they're all pretty worn. The pins are internally threaded and screw onto a stud that goes through the hubs and is held together by an 11/16 inch nut on the back of each pin. The pins look like they measure about 0.5 inches across, but they're pretty worn and they could originally have been larger, especially since I see the ones in the Dayton hubs, which are similar, but not the same, were apparently originally about 0.61 inches. I'd like to get the pins back to spec, and maybe a bit larger since the lug holes on one of the hubs have been wallowed out a bit, I'm presuming from being run a little loose on the hub. I was wondering maybe if Kevin Pharis has made these before, or Alex Dragone, or if somebody else could machine me a set of them. they do look look like they may be a pretty simple lathe project. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will also try to attach a picture from the northwest speedster library that shows the Pasco hubs I have with the pins. If somebody wants to see an actual pin up close, I can post pictures of that too. Thank you and best regards!

John, I lost a wheel and hub last year on the Spokane tour because I didn't check and the prier owner hadn't peened the nuts on the inside of the left rear brake hub. (across a field and lay down in the weeds 1/4 mile away.) I made the replacements using grade 5 bolts of the correct length, tapped as close to the head as I could, then threading 2 grade 5 nuts tight to the head. I then chucked the bolt in the drill press and, using an angle grinder, ground off the flats to the desired diameter. I finished with a file while it was in the drill. A little paint and you cannot tell them from originals. I used the narrow standard thread nuts that are stock so used standard vs fine thread bolts. I strongly doubt the Pasco studs are harder than grade 5. I think I'd wreck my dies trying to cut #8 bolts. Don't forget to pean them!

There was a fellow in the LA area making repo pasco hubs & wheels with in the past 5 years. Not exact on spelling. Tony Meagi or meakey ? (front plate tony)
Maybe one of the Long Beach boys can give you more or some details.

These pins look like a real simple lathe project.
