1913 Runabout with side curtains

Post by Original Smith » Mon Jul 04, 2022 5:08 pm

Does anyone have photos to share of a 13 runabout taken in the old days?

Well, I have looked through a couple hundred 1913 and 1914 Ford photos on my computer. Found a couple 1913 touring cars with side curtains if that could help? Must be a least fifty 1913 runabouts, not a single one with side curtains on. Another couple 1914 touring cars with side curtains, and no 1914 runabouts with the curtains in place.
So I guess I am no help whatsoever.

Can you tell me what you're wanting to see or find?

I'll post these two just so people have something to look at.

Here is a 1914 with rear side section.
I believe Tom posted this one.

Thanks for all the help guys. I've got a good idea now what Ford did, plus I have an original print of a '13 touring side curtain. When I restored my car, I was lucky to have the original top for a pattern, so at least I know where all the fasteners are located. I made side curtains for my 1925 runabout several years ago. I was lucky on that one in that not only did I have the Ford prints, I also had nos side curtains too. It is a fun experience being able to do all this. I will certainly keep you all aware of my progress.

I 'borrowed' this photo from somewhere (-likely from here ;) ) but it shows something pretty similar to the picture Rich posted. Not sure that helps much.

Brent: That is what I'm looking for! I have an original 1915 Parts and Accessory booklet that shows that exact image. I also have two very bad originals, that have been highly modified. They will be of help on the techniques in stitching that Ford used. I just ordered the Turf Grain material from Mike at Classtique yesterday for this project. I also have a bag of original fasteners that were removed from tops and side curtains many years ago, so I don't have to use any the the current fasteners that just don't look right.

I just clicked on the Hyman website for the '13. For those of us who know 13's, there are numerous examples of problems that should have been addressed when the car was restored. It appears to me that a previous owner had the car professionally restored by a company that didn't have the means or the knowhow to do the proper research to restore this car. First the horizontal shape of the top is incorrect where it joins the rear bow. It is correctly shown on the 1914 runabout shown above. Also the horn is a 1915. I could go on and on about little details, on a truly beautiful restoration.

I agree with Mark. It would be good to see pictures of what "IS" correct. We often post pictures that have problems and don't get to see what is right often enough. Thanks for pointing these out Larry.

Here's one for you Larry. No bill on the fender. Is it '13 or '14?

I’m going to say 13 because of the extra bead on the bottoms of the body tub.

Zooming in on the windshield, the hinges appear poised for the top frame to fold forward. Pretty much also means a 1913!
Nice photo. I don't think I have seen that one before.

Interesting. Now the boy's coat is backwards???
However this seems to put the POL tank on the usual side.
And, yes, the "flip and zoom" does help!
Thank you.

Thanks Keith, that photo is great. Too bad all those people are blocking what I want to see! For those who own 13 & 14 runabouts, note the curve of the top at the rear bow.

I just noticed another detail that points out this is probably a '13. It has a tea cup oil pan.
