Post by DHort » Thu Jul 07, 2022 12:14 am

The Midwest Speedster Rally started to day with a meal at the Pizza Ranch in Portage,WI. The Rally was started many years ago by Russ Potter.

Thursday we will head to Beaver Dam on Highway P through Pardeeville and Cambria. Our destination is the Beaver Dam Race Track. Hopefully we will be able to test the track's clay surface.

Hope to see you along the road.

11 speedsters. I will send some pics to Rob since I cant post pics here. Hopefully he can add them.

Today we had a beautiful day driving 45 miles across the state to the Beaver Dam Raceway. The day stayed sunny so we were allowed to drive on the clay track. It was like driving on crushed rock, so we bounced and shook our way around the oval. On normal race days they water the track and it gets smooth like rough asphalt. I think I still have all my teeth.

I tried to take a video but the camera operator had his finger covering half the lens.

Then the pace car took us to a delightful restaurant for lunch.

Today, Friday, we spent the morning driving in the rain to Big Cat Rescue. If a zoo has too many cats or an owner can no longer car for one it can come here. Lions, tigers, white tigers, leopards, etc. Then on the way to lunch 5 of us plus the rescue cars took a left instead of a right. We went on an adventure and arrived about an hour late. Hey, the sun was out and we had a fun drive. On the way home one car ran out of gas, one car lost a timer roller but had a spare, and we went up and down many hills and valleys. Good experience dropping down into low gear to get up a hill. What a lot of fun.

Tomorrow we head to Amish area, especially to the bakery.

Saturday, our last day. Beautiful weather, excellent lunch, fun in the parking lot afterward.
We got up early and the sun was shining. We drove to the Amish Village, up the hills, and down the hills, to the left, and to the right. Fantastic driving areas in south central WI. Some hills you had to drop into low, and then on the other side you roared down at 50mph. Love it.
a
Made it to the Amish Village and visited the woodworking shop, the General Store, Thrift store, Buggy store, and the Harness shop. I drove very carefully and did not rear end any buggy's. I almost side swipped a horse. I swear he popped out of no where.

For lunch we drove to the small town of Markesan. The mayor saw us eating lunch and gave us all a commemorative medal for the towns 150 anniversary. The coin is about 2 1/2 inches wide, like a bloated silver dollar. I think I will use mine to mark my ball on the green when I play golf.

Then we drove back so some could pack, since we were heading home that evening or the next morning after the banquet and raffle.

I had already packed, so I drove over the the Indian Agency house and Surgeons Quarters of Fort Winnebago. We were based in the city of Portage which is where the fur traders would come from all over the great lakes to carry their goods south. You would bring your canoe here, and then transport it overland 1 1/2 miles to the Wisconsin River. The Wisconsin is connected to the Mississippi River so you could paddle all the way to New Orleans. Eventually a canal was built. They also have a school house on site from 1850 that you can visit.

Lots of fun. Great bunch of people including Russ Potter and part of his family. Unfortunately I did not win the carburetor that he donated to the raffle.

That is the best that I can do. I cannot download any pictures of individual cars. Next year is in the works so anyone
that would like to join us somewhere in the midwest, make a note of the Midwest Speedster Rally.

It was a great weekend! Look for info on next year's rally, (location to be determined), and join us!!!

My Speedster had fuel delivery problems the first day so I missed driving on the track. The next 2 days it ran great with a temporary "fix" to get it going. Awesome roads, great people, lots of fun! Was fun meeting and speaking with you Dave. :)
