Nasty! I find myself wondering what could have done all that damage? It looks like a basic nice delivery truck with the main body ripped off the chassis, and the front axle assembly literally torn from the front cross member?
Do you recognize the license plate? I tried to zoom in, and could tell there appears to three or four letters down the (truck's) left hand side of the plate. This is how many of our states did their plates during the 1920s. However, it appears the truck is right hand driven which would make a USA truck and plate unlikely.
Interesting photo to be sure.
Thank you Adrian W!

The white gate beside the wreck is a railway crossing gateway.
The tracks are visible too, so that might be a clue as to what happened there!
Another New Zealand South Island location.
The plate is 94-508 and is mid to late 20's

Thanks, Adrian. Great picture. The train always has the right-of-way and always wins the argument. Bob

Looks like either they tried to beat the train or the brakes failed.

How did the truck get so wrecked and the basket to the right seemingly undamaged?

The basket is lightweight and elastic.
