has anybody ever changed the front motor mount without removing the engine,(can it just be raised or not)?

I HAVE done it!

Early ones are easy. Car sitting steady. Remove U-bolts and front hold-down piece. Lift front of engine about 3/4 inch (a jack underneath will work!). Slip out old, slip in new. Replace and adjust all the bolts and U-bolts for spring and chassis level.
Can actually be done by loosening (not necessarily removing) the radiator.

Later ones. Will need to remove the radiator. Remove under spring clamp, and the pan front hold-down piece. Lift front of engine, might need to go an inch? Then using a small hammer, tap the spring/engine mount sideways and just a bit up the crossmember's slope. From there it should lift right out. Put the new one in to one side, tap it lightly sideways into place under the engine. Replace all the bolts, clamps and pieces. Check chassis level, reinstall radiator etc.
That was how I did mine years ago when I stripped the bolt holes in the engine mount.

I would also loosen the side motor mounts and the wishbone socket to take the stress off the pan while lifting.
