Very nice pictures, Tom. Thank you for posting them. It gives us a good feel for what life was like in the early 1900's.

Good grief !! In that 5th pic from the top: 1923 Morrisville NY; is that road uncovered from snowfall ?!?! Never seen anything like it I’m sorry your COVID symptoms continue Tom. Prayers for your soon recovery.

Well they always make me feel better and I was feeling fine to begin with.
This is the third time I looked through these and I always see something new in them.

The 19th picture down is something else. According to the handwritten info on the left hand corner it’s a view of a car that was in an earthquake. The T was parked next to a brick wall or bldg. and destroyed in the quake. Any other ideas? But it seems to be right.

Hope your back to normal soon. When I had the Covid I didn’t get really sick but just felt bad. Took about 10 days to get to feeling better. Hang in there.

That picture of the earthquake in Inglewood, Ca. happened in March 1933. My parents and grandparents told me about that one. It happened a few years before I was born. I grew up in Montrose which is about 15 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. We lived in a brick house. That house was built in a very strange way. The bricks were two rows of bricks on their sides with one at the end of each brick which went across between the two rows. That left a hollow space between each row of bricks, like hollow concrete blocks. There was no reinforcement and that space was left open. It was probably done that way for insulation from the weather. Our next door neighbor used to tell me that house would fall down some day in an earthquake. She told me about a boy who lived there during that Long Beach earthquake and he went around and picked up bricks which had fallen out and his father cemented them back in place. Well almost 90 years later the house is still standing!

I am fairly sure that the Earthquake photo was not of the 1933 quake. There were two significant Earthquakes in the Los Angeles area during the early and mid 1920s. I would suspect that photo is from one of those.

The roller skates and Hupmobile picture is likely a movie still. Not sure, but I think I remember seeing that film! a fellow on roller skates hitching a ride behind a model T touring car then getting thrown off in front of an oncoming car! Quite a stunt.

Sad to hear that you are still feeling badly. I hope that you get well soon! And that you and yours all recover fully!

I think the runabout being winched across the rapids was taken in the Sierras. It was making a crossing in 1911.

That is a famous photo here in Nevada County, CA. Each year there was a prize for the first one across the Sierras to a hotel in Tahoe (if my memory is correct). The 1910 Ford Tourabout owned and driven by a local mine owner (Foote if I remember correctly) was the winner in 1910. Here you can see how the got the jump on the local competition by flying it across a river. Note the rope “tire chains”… there were no plow cleared roads.

I am a bit fuzzy on the details, but this car was the first across in 1910 and the owner won the cash prize and bragging rights.

With modern roads and plows this run is now very easy for model T cars… heck even a Jeep can do it… even without prizes!

Wayne, I think you are right. I looked again and saw June 21, 20. My family was there at that time too. But it was a long time before I was born. My grandparents and my father and his brothers were there at that time. They came to California in 1895. They built some of the stations along the Pacific Electric Railroad and other buildings.

My wife's father (passed away a few years ago) remembered the 1933 quake. He was being raised by foster parents and sitting in his high chair eating when it hit! It may have been his earliest clear memory.
Frankly, he was not a good person. His childhood was almost straight out of Dickens. I always tried to admire him for what he had to survive as a child. But in the end? I still couldn't.

I'm trying to figure out what equipment they would have had to clear the snow that straight and deep?

Scott and Scott: when snow flurries begin to swirl here in south central Texas you can be sure all levels of governmental workers are sent home and others throughout th US have to contend with their jobs until snowfall gets deep and the weight of it bears down on touring tops

Growing up in San Jose California, it snowed in San Jose almost every year. NEAR THE TOP OF MOUNT HAMILTON! One time, when I was young along about 1962, we got about five inches of snow on the floor of the valley (an extremely rare event!). It happened on a weekend, so the city shutting down for it was no big deal.
Regardless, my dad had grown up in Nevada high desert country where it gets very cold, and snows a fair amount every year. He taught me how to handle snow and ice, especially driving.

Fast forward about forty years, and we move to grass Valley, where it snows almost every year, usually several inches in a day, and sometimes a build up to more than a foot standing snow!
One of the things that absolutely amazes me, is the amount of people here, BORN here, lived their entire lives here, that CANNOT drive in the snow! Two inches of snow can almost completely shut down the whole town!

I did find out that that is the best time to go to the DMV to get a model T reregistered. They had sent all but three employees home, and there was not one other customer in the place!

Tom; When I had the COVID I was having a new roof put on the house. All the hammering and other noises made it worse. I was out of it for about a week and a half. Hope you feel better today than yesterday.
