Restoring a 1909 Pontiac body

One of my 1909’s has the wood sheathing beneath the long aluminum panel on each side of the bottom portion of the body & has decayed after 112 years. All of the skeleton is still in remarkable condition. The aluminum had damage on those bottom panels so new panels were made & temporarily fitted minus the wood backing. The wood panels are very thin about the thickness of luan paneling. I guess my question is what purpose do they serve? Could they be left off without compromising the body. Thanks John

Normally those panels are installed as a "cross grain" support. I would reinstall new ones as it is part or its integrity.

You should give Ray Wells a call, he has done a few of them. I have a pretty nice original aluminum door and some nice original door upholstery if your in need.

Did all of the 09 Pontiac bodies have that wood under the skin? I have never looked for it on mine but will check on it.

Bob as far as I know they did. I looked at the other 09 as I was taking items off for consistency. Best John
