First, he's Mennonite, and second, he DOES have "some" electronic communication as expressed abovce. You leave a message and he always calls back within a day, often the same day.

Not Amish, eh? I would swear that he is. He lives in the middle of an Amish community and follows the Amish way of no connection to the power grid, etc. As to telephones and credit cards, every Amish community is different, abiding by the rules set by the local bishop. When I visited Stutzman's last year I was surprised by the number of "Amish" riding electric three-wheeled bikes as well as the typical buggies. Not far away was another Amish community that not only didn't have electric bikes, the bikes they had didn't have pedals. You pushed it along with your feet!

Regardless of his religious affiliation, Noah Stutzman is a nice guy and a very talented wheelwright. He's done a few wheels for me and they are top quality. While I was there he was making a big order of wagon wheels. Apparently it's a thing now to rent out Conestoga wagons as campers at some campgrounds.

I don't know about Conestoga wagons, but it's popular to rent out sheep-camps. (and you don't even have to herd sheep)

Here’s another old thread brought back to life by a scammer/spammer. That person will likely make several fairly nonsense posts over a period of time and once their number of posts looks like they are active forum members, will begin to scam people or post spam…

To further hijack the thread I looked up Conestoga Wagon Campers. They build them up to 30 feet long and 10 feet wide with full bath and room to sleep six. There are also smaller ones but they all fall under the heading of "Glamping" or Glamor Camping. Geez!

When I visited Stutzman they were really cranking out wagon wheels so there must be a demand.

Those wagon riders would smoke a cheap cigar that started the term “stogie”.

If Stutzman was Amish, he would not have a telephone nor a computer; as a Mennonite he can. Basically, Mennonites are to the Amish, what a reform is to an orthodox Jew.

The Amish are not completely uniform in practice. Many Amish use cell phones, and many use telephones and answering machines... just not in the home. They often have a little "out house" that has the phone in it. The local Bishop determines what modern things can be used. The Amish ride in automobiles by using "English" (non-Amish) drivers. AmishAmerica.com is a nice site that explains a lot about these interesting people.

Seeing that photo of the oversize Conestoga Wagon reminded me. One of the things that doomed the Donner Party was that they were mostly "well to do" and flaunting their wealth had their wagons built oversize. That added to some other things resulted in delays for their starting date, and then slowed them down a bit. They reached the forested lands on the Eastern side of the Sierra Mountains just as winter was moving in with a vengeance! Wagon trails had been cut through the thick forests for earlier wagon trains. However they were cut close to the common width of the standard Conestoga Wagons. Their custom wide wagons did not fit through the previously cut narrow trails. So although they did not have to cut entirely new trails, the time it took to widen the trails for their wider wagons allowed the storm time enough to trap them halfway up the mountain.

Just a historic tidbit. And a bit of thread drift.

Thank you Scott C! Old threads being revived is fine. Sometimes. Often new information is added, and a gentler approach to drift is sometimes found.

"Bots" that aid search engines are needed for future search purposes in order to keep information available. However, "bots" that participate usually cause harm in any of many ways. Spammers and scammers of all types should be vilified for the evil they do, and "shown the door" quickly.

Frankly, I have always found that some amount of "drift" keeps threads interesting. Often it can extend the usefulness of the thread's original intention and generate more repeat views. Often leading to again more useful information.
