Kelsey #30 rim hardware slightly OT

Post by Kevin Pharis » Mon Aug 08, 2022 12:36 pm

Helping a friend out with the demountable rim bolts on his 15 Hudson touring car. He was missing several rim bolts, and so wanted to make us a couple bolt sets for his 2 cars (6 per wheel). These wheels are wood felloe demountable rim, similar to some accessory wheels made for the T’s (eg. Firestone). The bolts are heavily splined to press into the wood felloe, and the head is deformed to lay against the rim to prevent turning.

Started with some 1-1/8” 4140 quenched and tempered steel bar with 95K psi yield strength and 25 Rc hardness. Should be pretty close to grade 5. Had the lathe running over the weekend and was able to complete the turning portion of the 50 bolts needed for the project. Here is the first one out of the mill, ready for test fit!

I learned a long time ago that machinists don’t get paid to make parts...! We get paid to make chips!😉

That is quite the project and fun to see the result.
Thanks for the look.
