How Do I Install a Throttle Lever?

I have installed a NH carb on my 1927 engine, so I need to install a lever in the hole in the rod. The hole is located about 10" below the present lever.
How do I get the rod exposed so I can slip the lever over the rod?

Ford made a bolt on lever just for this. T6297 I think. It was being reproduced, not sure if it still is.

Remove the pitman arm and lower support bracket. Then, remove all the paint from the throttle and timer rods, since it doesn't belong there anyway, (same with the steering shaft), and it will impede the installation of the lever. Then, slide the lever onto the throttle shaft & pin in place.

Clarify why the paint should be removed from the rods and steering shaft.

Paint does not need to be removed as long as the thickness of the paint does not impede the movement of the levers rods and steering shaft. The paint does serve the purpose of protecting them from rust. Mine are painted. Jim Patrick

If your block doesn't have the hole (have you checked?) this is available.

Follow the steps and photos in Ford Service, Chapter XXV, Steering Gear Overhaul. That includes removing the pitman arm ball, sometimes a gear puller is needed, sometimes just a lead mallet strike.
The timer lever arm has to be removed, by driving out the rivet, after that , just pull off the steering bracket from the shaft and the two rods.

Slip on the spacer bracket, that goes around the shaft and helps separate the two rods, then slip the new throttle arm up the throttle shaft, then be sure to index the arm so the long arm is pointed at the motor, with the lever at the quadrant moved all the way to the top. Rivet the arm to the throttle shaft, a small cut to length nail can be used as the rivet.

1. I'd buy the kit that John Z recommended and use things as-is
2. Or I'd buy this, and be done with it

since the steering bracket has never been off, then the bushing is undoubtedly original and worn. If you don't renew it, and don't restore everything on the front axle, you will have a pretty car that is constantly looking for a ditch.

Follow Scott's advice, check the bushing AND SHAFT for wear. My experience has been that both will be worn. Replacing the bushing will help, but the shaft may need to be built up to make the steering tight. YMMV, sincerely, jb

What is the best to check the shaft and bushing for wear?

While he’s getting into this, I’ll ask a similar question. Does this black “spacer/divider” stay in place anywhere or supposed to end up somewhere along the length of the shaft? I reckon left to it’s own it’d slide down to the carb lever anyway…

Yup, and that's where it does its best work.

Is that your column Rob ? Reason for asking is there are small pins that go inside the spring retainer cups - not cotter pins outside - the cups are upside down.

Oops! This is how they came off of Frankencar, easy enuff, I’ll swap that out! I reckon I thought it looked right because the springs went right into the cups! Thanks!

Pull the lower steering bracket, clean everything and measure the diameter of the shaft where it rides in the bushing. The shaft is probably worn to the extent you can 'feel' the difference between worn and original diameter, but a micrometer will quantify it. The wear on the shaft will not be uniform around the circumference. Build up the low spots with the mig and machine to original 0.750" diameter or throw about $250 toward a modern replacement steering shaft.
For the bracket, just replace the 7/8 x 3/4 x 1-1/4" bronze/brass bushing in the bracket (only one bushing in '26-'27). You will be pleased (and safer) with the results. jb

With the spark rod lever removed as Dan showed, put the steering shaft in a vise and tap the bracket off with a drift and a hammer.
