Wire Wheel Lug Nuts - Question

Post by ADP91 » Mon Oct 03, 2022 1:53 pm

Hello all,

I purchased a set of OEM model t lug nuts. But when I tried to thread them onto my wire wheel hubs they wouldn't go.

Are there Left hand and Right hand thread on the hub studs? (I have a used set that I've near seen mounted)

All the nuts I purchased are stamped with an "L" on them.

Any advice is appreciated!

if there is a place where they will work, it is on earlier demountable wheels ('19-'25), but those are not at all for later wire wheels.

there's been a miscommunication

Thanks for the heads up - thankfully I didn't spend much.

Langs does carry the correct nuts I believe.

26-7 wires are 1/2 -20 right hand thread. (all).
Those nuts are not the correct style/appearance of original nuts. The L is a big sign they are left hand thread. A good eye can catch the difference between a left or right hand thread.
Thats not to say your hub studs dont need their threads chased if the correct nuts dont go on.

Does anyone know a good source for 26-27 wire wheel lug nuts?

Re pop sets are available from vendors. There is/was a modern version with a slightly or next size hex & a bit taller, but very close in appearance otherwise. They were available at most auto parts stores like Pep Boys. I got mine @ a hot rod swap meet. The last ones I saw had the size stamped on them. The one's I found are un marked.

On the 1926-27 Ford wire wheels, do yourself a favor and buy the stainless washers offered by the vendors. They help preserve the paint, but more importantly, they keep the studs from contacting the inside of the nut and dimpling them. I've found that it's common for the holes in the wheels to become slightly enlarged, and the nuts can thread on further than designed to.

I put repro nuts on my wire wheels. They were chromed and would only torque to 45 ft lbs. 50 ft lbs and they would strip. Even with the washers.
Be careful

Ed, I'm not questioning your suggestion to use the washers under wire wheel lug nuts; I have considered them, myself, but I have also heard the 'devil's advocate' position that the use of the washers are more prone to the nuts loosening and requiring more constant retightening to keep them tight. Have you had or heard of this problem?

The lug nuts are from WW 2 jeeps. I have a couple of them and would be interested in buying the 5 from you if you are interested in selling them. $1.00 a piece.
Thanks.
