What have you done with your model T in October?
The weather this morning was perfect for a ride.
Can you think of a better way to start your day?

Last week I reassembled my NH with a new to me B float, yesterday I installed it, today with some fresh Gas I got it started. Had trouble at first then discovered I forgot to adjust the mixture . Made the adjustments and roared to life. Also replaced the sketchy filter screen

On Saturday, we got our 1920 Centerdoor out of the garage and moved it to another garage. We took a ride in our 1925 Touring for the first time in a few months. I got to drive! I had a lot of fun.
The future of our hobby does not depend as much on youth, but on the future of internal combustion.

We took Betty, the TT, to a show in Lafayette, Colorado. There was good company with the '14 RPU Survivor, the 2 hp Witte hit & miss engine in Betty, and the 25 hp Witte hit & miss engine on the truck.

Very interesting picture with lots of T's in it. I don't see any 1914 or earlier T's, they are the ones with straight rear fenders.

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
Carrying luggage with an accordion running board rack left some scrapes in the Tudor paint. I had saved some Dulux enamel and was able to find where I put it 20 years ago.
Light gray primer shows right up when there is a scratch for better or worse.
The Dulux isn't as available as it was years ago but has held up well on several of my cars.
Rich
I first wet sanded the areas (about 3/8"). Then I daubed on some paint a little larger than the spot. Next, I brushed thinner around the edges to keep from getting a thick edge. I will let it dry overnight and repeat it 2 or 3 times making larger spots until the sanded area is covered. Dulux really doesn't dry hard and takes a long time. Next spring, I will try to sand it very lightly and then rub it out.
Pictures of black paint are so reflective they don't show well but I think the idea can be seen. It took about 50 pictures to get these.Light gray primer shows right up when there is a scratch for better or worse.

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
The last time I drove the 22 Runabout, the generator was not charging. I tried flashing it across the cutout and it charged for a little while and then stopped. I tried a different cutout but it still didn't work. I have a 26 Roadster which has been parked over a year so I took the generator off it and tried it on the 22. While I was removing it from the 26 I dropped it and broke off the oil fitting on the end of it. After I put it on the 22 it didn't work either. So I have been driving the 26 Touring on which I replaced the headgasket last month. I think I finally got it fixed right, because it hasn't even needed any coolant added for several weeks even after about a 50 mile tour.
Anyway, today I drove the touring down to the local museum where we had a presentation for about 20 senior citizens who are in a class where they go around the San Diego area and visit the various historical museums. I parked it next to our buggy so they could see a horse drawn carriage along a horseless carriage. We had 3 groups of 6 or 7 people and 3 docents. So I was on my feet for about 3 hours and also just about wore out my voice. There are two houses there with displays inside each one and then outside are farm equipment and the vehicles as well as some other historical things in the barn. So our presentations were for about 1/2 hour each and when one group left and went to the next one etc, so I made my presentation 3 times this morning.
Yesterday I cleaned the commutator on the generator which I had taken off the 22 and it motored on a 6 volt battery. So I put it on the 22 and I used the crank to prime. When I turned on the ignition to batt, I got a free start. The generator works better now than ever. The one off the other car which I dropped has endplay in the shaft and the gear is kind of loose. I still have a few other generators and hopefully can get one to work so I can put it on the car which has been parked.
Thursday we have another group of seniors coming to the museum, so I will take the 22. It is 100 years old this year and looks more like a carriage than the 26.

Worked with the ‘fair wear and tear’ on my ‘26 tudor after the Texas T Party. Somehow lost the ammeter needle - replaced ammeter. Somehow broke the left emergency brake rod. Welded brake rod. Passenger door handle somehow became inoperable. Somehow ordered a new one from Lang’s
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people.

Today was the 2nd good day in a row to tour so off I went. 60 miles yesterday overall, few guys had 75. Today I went out through a wetland area and beyond, but only did 31 miles! Still a great day again. Tomorrow not so much!

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
I used a Stratus portable aviation GPS/traffic/weather receiver to record the tracks. I just turned it on and threw it in the back seat. After I got home I downloaded the tracks to an aviation app called ForeFlight (Apple only) and saved them as .kml files (a very common track log format). I then uploaded the .kml files to Google Earth to create the photo. There are apps that will do the same thing with just a phone, but this way I didn’t have to learn anything new except Google Earth, and that was fairly straightforward. (Google Earth allows multiple tracks to be easily displayed on one map, whereas I can’t get ForeFlight to display more than one).

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
I decided it was time to fix the separated rain rail on the Coupe. This photo was posted elsewhere.
download/file.php?id=143343&mode=view
Having tried to reattach it a few years ago it had come loose again. It was obvious why after pulling it back a bit. The Douglas Fir had rotted out at that point. It seems more solid elsewhere, but time will tell. Chiseling out the bad and making a poplar block to fit was my solution for now. West System's epoxy resin was applied liberally, and the block was clamped in place. The top material is still intact and could be retacked. Then I clamped the rain rail back into place forcing the previous nails into the new wood. Finally, a long wood screw will hopefully hold it tight for some more years. As I mentioned in the Foto of day post, I had made those rain gutters 9 years ago.

As tacky as the Rusty Coupe is, it has some features which are more authentic than some nicely restored cars. These are the choices we make in the "What's correct and What's Not" department.
All just part of the game we play.
It makes me smile.

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
Painted the 25 Touring a few days ago and starting to put some if it back together. I paint the body, fenders and other stuff separately, gives a better result. Shooting acrylic enamel and I will let it sit for a few weeks and then start wet sanding and buffing. That will help with some of the runs and orange peel... I think the acrylic enamel looks more authentic as compared to the urethanes.

Drove the 1920 Dodge to breakfast, again. Came home restaged were the T sat. Jacked all 4 wheels up off the ground. Looked at all the work still that still needs to be done and put the tarp back over it. Still waiting for the rods!

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
A school holiday in the south caused my daughter to show up here with my three grandchildren. My wife then celebrated her birthday with two daughters and a granddaughter. They ignored my request to stick to the four dollar menu and came back with numerous take away containers.
I promised my grandson that his uncle and I would make it up to him. So, we headed to the Ford Museum and then walked the Village. Lunch was at Ford’s Garage. The seven year old kid told our waitress that he’s an annual OCF participant so she insisted he come behind the bar and blow the oogha horn on the T Touring. He is excited about the two or three Garages planned for Knoxville and I had to promise onion rings once one opens.
My daughter returned home this morning so my son and I ended up at the shop pulling batteries and winterizing our Touring cars. We also surveyed what I need to finish my grandson’s Runabout so his mom and dad have something to drive at OCF 2023.
We also discovered that a 29 Ford crossmember can be fit in the frame backwards in spite of two old guys helping him do it right.

A little early perhaps, but I unpacked and rolled out the side curtains and installed my home-made winterfront on my 1924.

I drove it as transportation to our flea market spot at the Hershey Fall Meet! Had some fun conversations with some fellow Model T'ers and found the perfect spare tire carrier for it 1 row over from our flea market spaces.

It was "Draining Day" not to be confused with the Denzel Washington Movie.
The No. 2 pencil keeps the incoming antifreeze from escaping down the overflow tube.
Rich
We have had a couple of nights at 32° so it was time to drain radiators and put in antifreeze. I also drained the gas out of the cars I don't expect to drive this Winter. The Coupe was happy to receive the extra gas and postpone a trip to the filling station.
Others run antifreeze all year round, but I lose a few gallons and the water makes my pocketbook and the environment a little happier. The No. 2 pencil keeps the incoming antifreeze from escaping down the overflow tube.

Time for Lizzie's annual bath. We're invited again a week from Saturday to the "Trunk or Treat" the local repair shop puts on. It's kind of a car show, the kids vote for the car they like best. Lizzie cleans up pretty well for a "farm pickup"

Perry, your insinuations about my personal hygiene are crude and unwelcome. I'll have you know that I, like my sheepdogs, bathe daily in the ditch, often several times a day in the summer heat. Alas, snow is predicted for Saturday, so it will be on with the red flannel long-johns until sometime next spring when the canals turn in and we begin irrigation once more. Annual bath. Faugh! A calumny, sir ! A calumny !!

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
I aired up tires and pushed around several Model Ts in the barn to ‘uncover’ my 1911 restored Hupmobile runabout that I haven’t driven in many years. Will detail and service it in the next few days. Also removed the Simmons straight thru from the ‘26 Ford tudor that performed badly on a recent tour. Turns out it had no flapper and our friend Scott Conger emailed his reply of surprise it ran at all so its being packaged for mailing to Corey Walker for flapper installation
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people.

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
Took the '25 Roadster Pickup to Graceville, FL for a car show to raise funds/gifts for needy children at Christmas. There were 199 awesome looking vehicles there and two Model T's. Lee Wolfe with his 1923 Touring and us. Both took judges choice. Our lil T also took "Best of Show Truck - Stock" .
Always a great day when the Model T is recognized and getting to talk T with folks there.

My car was down for repairs last fall, so I'm taking advantage of the nice fall weather we are having this year.
I drove thru the Kettle Moraine State Forest today, the fall colors were at peak! Last chance for a burger, they close for the season tomorrow. Photo-op with one of the murals in town.

A tour date with the 2022 Melbourne Cup (Think Aussie version of the Kentucky Derby) The race that stops the nation, first Tuesday of November. The 2022 Melbourne Cup was touring my area stopping in the town where the 1915 winner was acknowledged with a statue. They were requiring a 1915 era vehicle to pose for photos with both the 1915 trophy and the yet to be awarded 2022 trophy. The 2022 trophy is valued at .75 Mil$ and is made of 24ct Gold. The 1915 trophy is priceless! A wonderful day.

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
I made a new set of top straps for the Runabout:
I used the original footman loops and rings for the rear straps, but new tongueless buckles. Both of the original buckles had been broken. I had found a post on the old Forum from R.V., and he gave the correct length for the woven web straps:
http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/82 ... 1523326947
The hardest part was finding the correct webbing. Most all of the cotton webbing that is sold is more fashion-over-function: too thin (0.075" +/-0.005 vs. 0.108" +/-0.005) and not as tight of a weave. A genuine military web belt is the right thickness, but wrong width, you need a 6L webbing, 1" wide. Thicker and tighter weave, 6L on the left and the thinner webbing on the right.
I was fortunate enough to get a couple of n.o.s. buckles/hooks for the front straps from Bob Bergstadt, as the originals had been lost long before I got the car.

I have been too busy to enjoy the T's much this year. Tucked them both in for winter and pulled the batteries. This work thing gets in the way of T time.

I managed to make it to 75 years on Wednesday and I wanted to drive my T 75 miles to celebrate but weather was not conducive to this on my bday sooo! Tim Wrenn set up the proceeding tour on Sunday And what a beauty I went out beforehand and put some miles on and then hooked up with the rest of the gang for an enjoyable afternoon of touring. I managed to put exactly 100 miles on old Herkermer. And we are going out again tomorrow. Jim

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
But the funny part of the story above is, when we all left the ice cream shop in Vermilion, unbeknownst to me, Jim went a slightly different direction and met us at that bridge in the pic above! I told the wife I was a bit worried if he was okay when I realized hee wasn't "back there" (vibrating mirrors!), altho I was sure he would call on the phone if he needed help. So, it was vroom vroom for Jim!
Happy belated birthday Jim!
See ya soon in Havanna for our last "T lunch tour" probably!

I did a 66-mile tour on my 67th birthday earlier this month; I should have driven once more around the block! Also, I love the name “Herkermer”; how did you come up with that?

Tweeked, Blasted, primed, painted the frame. Refurbished the front spring and axle beam. Working on the rear spring. Applied slip plate to both spring packs and waiting for some new repo OEM shackle kits and oiler cups to show up. Most of all having fun with it!

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
I have started the re-restoration of a 1912 Commercial Roadster that was owned by the late Ken Jones. I have a set of wheels being built at Stutzman's. The car was not assembled when I got it, although the parts were pretty well organized, so I am figuring out how everything goes together. I have restored a 1926 Coupe and a few Model A's, but I have to say these early brass T's are in a league of their own.
Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
Actually, it is probably more accurate to say that I am "finishing the re-restoration" that Ken Jones started but, unfortunately could not finish. And I am starting to feel like I am the only person on earth actually restoring a brass car nowadays!

My son and his family wanted their family photos with one of the T's. So for the grandkids, grampa had to install the battery and get it out of the shed where it spends the winter
After all that , Kelly and I drove it to town for supper

Re: What have you done with your model T in October?
Last week I finally found what I believe to be the correct for January 1914 mag post. It came with one like is at the left. Then I ordered one and it was a modern type, then about 10 years ago I got the 3rd one but I believe it is 1915-1917. So after 25 years I finally believe I have the correct one (far right). I know you can’t see it, but I know it’s there.
Then those combination hex/slotted screws are hard to come by so I thought try making some. I made the bottom 2. They’re pretty close to the top 2 originals.
I have since found enough good magnets for my speedster flywheel. I need to replace the triple gear pins before I do anything else.

With unusual good weather and high temperatures I did a last drive this year after changing to anti-freeze and before the T was prepared for sleeping the next 5 or 6 months.
