This object is on the face of the coil box. If you zoom in the name on it is “the defender “.
Anyone know what it does ? It has three positions for the key.

This is a after market switch that uses a better key switch than original. It could be a complete replacement or just a unit that covers the original. Made3w by several companys.

Aftermarket accessory cover with a 'real' key to put over the Ford flip switch that used a universal key, this way you could get insurance on your Ford!
Several makers and styles, until Ford came out with a proper switch key on the dash panel!

I have the mysterious switch and the switch on the dash. What positions should they be in to start the truck?

Can't give any advice, other than locate all the wiring to each switch and determine where it goes.
Could be the coil box switch works the ignition, and the combo switch on the dash is 'dead' on the ignition settings of BAT and MAG, and only the flip handle works the Dim and Bright headlamp settings
And see if that coil box has coils inside, you may have a disturbator for ignition.

It would be the same as a normal switch. The contacts inside the switch would normally be Ford, just the cover and tumblers would be different.

This New York Security box showed up at a swap meet. It's a similar switch. I was disappointed at first that the switch was not in it but happy a nearly new original switch cover and key that were removed to install it were there.
