Has anyone seen this happen before? Out driving today at it happened

I've never seen anything like that. I've seen a lot of casting failures, but I've never seen such a neat one. The only thing I can think of, assuming that's not a modification made after manufacture, is that someone made a repair of some sort on a casting flaw, perhaps a plug pressed into a drilled-out blowhole.

There must have been a plug or drill hole for an accessory. That hole is to neat for a blowout.

Would it be for a spark plug to light off some gas and make flames out the pipe?

Found out that it was for a hot air pipe for an accessory carburetor. The hole was plugged, but not correctly.

Looks like the hole may be around 3/4” but that’s a guess. If you wanted to repair it instead of brazing it up you just might thread it and install plug or threaded bushing with a smaller plug. Others will have another method to fix it.

I'd look for a better manifold. Last I knew they still made repros. I bought and installed one about 5 years ago.

Weird. Can you thread with a pipe tap and put a plug in it? At least as a temporary fix?

Maybe sell that one and get one without the hole. There might be someone out there looking for that exhaust manifold to complete their Stromberg setup.

Richard and Scott are correct. The manifold is one that either came with a Stromberg OF originally, or was modified to use with one. The hole is probably threaded, or should have been, for the valve that turned on or off, the heated gas to pre-heat the air to the intake manifold. The hold is in precisely the correct place for the valve. P.S. Original Poster, if you don't want that manifold, I'll trade you a perfectly straight original manifold for it, and I'll pay all the shipping on both.

there would be a drilled/tapped hole in the BACK of the manifold, with a stud coming out centrally, through the large hole in front. The whole mess would be secured with a wing nut on the stud...no threads in the large hole in the picture...
