A few years back someone was making a hand crank coil checker kit. Anyone have an idea who was making that and if they still have some? I am looking for one for my museums display.

For about 10 years up until last year when he passed away Bob Scherzer was making a kit for a Allen Electric HCCT.
Bob was a retired industrial arts teacher and had a casting foundry and machine shop at his home. Pretty heavy duty tools for a hobbyist.
To my knowledge no one is currently making the kits.

What exactly is a "checker kit" for a hand cranked coil tester ????

Bob Scherzer used to make them and Lang's used to sell them. They were nice. Ancient History, unfortunately,

(now I see that Ron Patterson replied with the same info above, that I did...not sure how I missed that... )

Educate us on some ancient history of the hand crank coil checker kit.

as well as Mike's products seem to work, I'm not sure that Travis is looking to display one in his MUSEUM.

Interesting, I don't use Google but I enquired of the double-duck the "ancient history of the hand crank coil checker kit" and about all it returned was an entry about Bob Cascisa's and Ron Patterson's book (which appears to be about "Ford’s original HCCT" so I guess won't cover what Robert and Travis were wanting to know).

As you earlier said, Scott, the little I could see there looked to be a nice unit. Given Ron's information it's an impressive outcome for a home manufacturer, seems to me that a bit more about Bob Scherzer and his tester could be useful for anyone coming across one of his units, and another interesting thread in the rich tapestry of Model T history...

I made a hcct from plans on one of the club websites. Turned out better than expected, works great and even looks old.
Not too complicated to make. Bought a few measured pieces of steel and had a buddy weld them up. drilled holes in all the right places, bought a couple og bearings added a flywheel and coil and brake drum and it was complete. Fun project

Travis, This is one that I made from plans found online, at this time I cannot remember who's plans they were sorry. If I find the plans I printed out I will let you know. Jim

There is a nice look original HCCT for sale on the classified page. I know it is not one of the kits ask for but it is nice and reasonable.

Thanks for getting back to me. Sad to hear Bob left us. One of the things I have learned in the 20 plus years restoring my 1926 Runabout is that when you see something like that you need to buy it ASAP. I used to have the flawed mindset that stuff like that would always be available. I will start looking for an original that’s restored and working. I planed on putting it on display behind a replica sales counter in the back museums building with all my restored gas pumps etc., along side all of my original tools.

On a side note: my 20 year restoration of my first model t is finished thanks to Mike Bender doing the long block for me while I rebuilt my house from a total loss fire. I’m looking forward to my next model t restoration now.

Jim, did you also make the spark ring.

I have a friend that needs one.

Bob Scherzer made all the cast parts and sold them as a kit.

I bought a set from him at Hershey before Langs started selling them.

He later sold me a refurbished coil ring with paint to match the rest of it.

He also made an upgrade Simpson Volts and Amps Gauges, with all the screws needed to mount the meters, to replace a large original Amps meter type.

Those meters are difficult to find now.

That was about 30 years ago, and mine still works like new.

Jim, Yes the ring is turned from an old piece of bearing material I scavenged out of the scrap when I was still working. After turning I set it up on a dividing head to cut in the divisions and the screw holes. The crank is made from an old wrench that I cut down, the handle is just out of my stash of (Someday I'LL find a use for this), I have since shortened the crank because it tended to throw the whole thing off balance. The gauges were some that I collected over the years and just happened to match. Jim
