What have you done with your Model T in January

Post by TFan » Sun Jan 01, 2023 10:52 pm

I'll see if I can be first this year. My wife and I along with Champ took our annual New Years Day drive around our downtown which borders Sandusky Bay. It was a little chilly at 47 degrees but much better than last week. The first pic is in front of the salt dock along the bay (IN CASE YOU WONDER WHY OUR CARS RUST SO BAD this is the reason) pics 2&3 are at our shoreline park at the opposite end of our downtown. I was able to put about 5 miles already this year. Yippy! Jim PS. Happy New Year

Congrats Jim! Yep you're first in line, and heck it's already Monday even and no one's been doing anything to their T's yet I guess
I ALMOST took the Fordor out but played the lazy card instead. Glad you Bonnie & Champ got out!! Especially Champ. I'm sure he was going through withdrawal!

I would have driven out T yesterday probably for an ice cream run but it rained hard all day.

Bummer! Maybe we'll go for a ride today.

A-B tappets? Ever do this before? How do those thin lifter castings hold up?
Any particular reason for not going to a stock T oversize?
Inquiring mind on the loose.

John, I've never done it, but it is well documented. I'm not worried about the casting being thin.
The reason to do it with the B cam is that the foot is much larger on the AB tappit. If you put a T tappit in the duration of the lift would be much less. Lift would stay the same.
The other thing I will add to all this is it's not a job for the weak of heart.

What a great pickup Mark. I use about a 5/8 rope for mud or snow. Does not hold up well on road, but off road its great.

I decided I wanted to check the alignment of a Model T connecting rod using the KR Wilson alignment fixture:
FE764D60-EAE2-4FF3-B686-D6658B8EDD20.jpeg
The C clamp’s purpose is to hold the spider tight in the top of the rod. The spider is not machined to accept a piston pin clamping screw.
4E5A504A-B8B7-404E-B9A5-D282EC330E00.jpeg
All of the old time rod alignment fixtures I have used suffer from the same drawback: you need different mandrels for undersize rods. I only have a standard size mandrel for the Wilson fixture. I made up .010, .020 and .030 undersized mandrels for my Stevens rod alignment fixture. I haven’t done so for the Wilson… yet.

Respectfully Submitted,

Finally had a chance to chase down an overcharging issue that showed up on my last drive back from a nearby car show in October. Blew out both headlight bulbs. Researching this forum pointed me to the generator-ammeter-battery circuit. Sure enough found a meltdown on one of the terminals of my repop ammeter. It wasnt grounded when I checked it but I suspect when the insulation inside and out was hot and gooey, it was grounding. Found another repop but also on the hunt for a decent original. I did modify the repop per the YouTube video about soldering the internal terminals to eliminate a potential source of heat from poor connections.

Good looking used originals show up on ebay frequently for reasonable money. There were 3 more added this week.

Pressed some new bushings in the spindles. Iam waiting for the proper mandrel to show up for the Sunnen hone then they will be sized for the king pins.

Pressed in the triple gear pins in the flywheel then test fit the gears with caged needle bearings
13EDAA6F-D7FC-43DA-8CEE-85591332618F.jpeg
Had the trans drums checked for cracks. All is good so pressed in the new bushings. Next they will be sized to each other.

The drive plate passed the crack test but had some loose rivets so out they go and I will try my hand at installing new ones.
And still having fun with it!

Wish you had asked first on the drum bushings...it is exceedingly rare that they wear beyond serviceable limits, and if replaced, they should be reamed concentric to the pitch diameter of the gear which revolves around it...not an easy thing to accomplish without special tools or extensive set-ups.

Do a LOT of study on the forum for proper clearances particularly the brake drum to output shaft bearing clearance.

You did yourself a big favor by going with Dan's triple gears but took a step back by changing those big bushings.

Maybe give significant consideration to reaching out to someone set up to make all of those drums fit together correctly and contract with them to do the final fitting/reaming

As for installing rivets, take a look at YouTube to see how Mike Bender does it. You will learn exactly how to do it and have it very secure. I like his method and assure you it is not something that is particularly intuitive until you see it done.

Thanks Scott! I have been collecting information about the drums for awhile. I will be visiting my friend with the machine shop to finalize the job. If he can’t do it nobody can. I did watch the model t tips video on the rivet job. It gave me the confidence to go for it.

I found bits of broken brush holder insulation when I replaced a starter bushing. I replaced the insulators but still need to face the bushing for proper fit. It's too cold in the barn to spend quality time there. I will get it done little by little.

front end finished.jpg
I finally finished rebuilding the front end. The axle had been bent slightly from hitting something (tree? car? wall?) before I pulled it out of a barn. The perches were on backwards and so the right wheel had positive caster and the left wheel had slight negative caster. The wishbone had been broken and welded with a piece of angle iron. Needless to say, the car drove a little strange.
I took everything apart, cleaned, painted, and put slip plate on the springs. I had the spindle bushings redone and did anything that needed repair. It's now in the car as of yesterday and awaiting a test drive. Here's a photo of the front end before installing.

Haven't been on the forum much lately but I've made great strides in my fuel injection project on my 16 t. Now comes the test drive phase, still a few months away while I install it on the car.

Added one quart oil and oiled the fittings added some coolant to the radiator of my Screwed down the grease cups a bit, checked tire pressure, and drove the 22 Runabout to the local museum for open house. Saturday it was clear, that is when I took it. just a little chilly. Today it has been raining very hard.

Wow, very nice! Some of those little Holley carbs came with clear glass float bowls.

Moved my 1919 from the shop garage to the house garage so my son could put his modern iron in the shop for repairs.
It was cold, about 30*, but nice and sunny so Ruby and I took a quick spin around the neighborhood.
