One of the lesser-known DC comics.

I can't verify the original source, but I've seen it used many times with different words for a variety of subjects.

So let me get this story correct....in the beginning circa 1908-1909 Henry had his boys constructed a new car called the Model T. The early Model T had a water pump for cooling. At the time to other automobiles, not Ford were either air cooled, thermo cooled, or with a water pump. Then Henry thought of a way to have his engineers and designers get their hands dirty whiles he counted the money and design a Model T that was cooled by thermo. A way to save manufacturing cost eliminate a factory water pump.

Lo... the Model T was thermo cooled from 1909 to about 1921, when a Market Executives thought hat it may be time to introduce a water pump to the Model t. And the Ford Times beginning in 1921 began to advertise the advantage of having a water pump.

Suddenly water pumps were found in all automobile journals for sale.

A way to keep your Model T running cooler. "They Said."

More like the way to circulate coolant with antifreeze mixtures of the day..alcohol, glycerin, etc,. With cold air pulling thru the radiator, risk of solution freezing is high. Those pumps kept the coolant solution well mixed.

Everything about early cars needs to be put into a context in that era. By 1910 there were not many cars and hardly any paved roads. As traffic increased and cars slowed down in cities cooling likely became more of an issue. Radiator design was repeatedly changed. Water pump designs in that era were not always efficient, since they operated in an unpressurized system and weren't really a "pump" pushing water flow but more of a propeller accelerating available water provided by the thermo system. If you picture the flow of coolant in the system as a closed vertical loop flowing at a given rate, add a period water pump to accelerate the flow up through the engines water jacket and up into the radiator, then gravity takes over for the coolant to flow down around and back up to the water pump. There is a a balance between what the pump can provide and what gravity provides for the water to flow down through the radiator. The water pump isn't pushing that coolant through the radiator its just providing water volume , perhaps more than the thermo system does.

Dr. 12 Volt was revolting, charged too much and had amps in his pants.
Perhaps we will see him in the future if time permits.
I am glad to see more responses to this thread. There is much wisdom out there.
Thanks Steve.

Frank,

"... and weren't really a "pump" pushing water flow but more of a propeller accelerating available water provided by the thermo system."

"a propeller accelerating available water" That's a pump.

"The water pump isn't pushing that coolant through the radiator its just providing water volume..."

The coolant volume is a constant, assuming no leakage or "boil-off".

Also, I don't get how in your explanation, thermosyphon works fine in the radiator, but somehow fails in the engine, needing a pump to boost it along? Are the laws of physics different in the engine?

Dr. 12 Volt was overpowering. His shorts were too long, and wherever he showed up, fashionistas were upset, crying, "Ohm my gosh ! Why can't he stay current ?"
but he always put up resistance. He tried to team up with Ms. 9 Volt Mag, but they were incompatible, and the sparks really flew whenever they were together.

Gosh I laughed when I saw that Tim and thought to myself. Hey, I resemble those remarks!
Almost like Mr Natural Spoke and Mr Painted Spoke chatting with each other over the fence. "We can get along good" while blowing raspberries under their breath.
Going thru my files, I found this.
