Lubricating a Stock 1924 T

Post by Model T Ron » Wed Feb 08, 2023 10:49 pm

I have a 1915 Touring but everything has been modified with Grease Fittings. I am about to get a stock 24 Coupe and wanted to see if anyone can attach instructions on lubricating the car. I am referring to the small oiling caps and grease fitting that are packed and screwed in. The car is coming out of a several year storage and do not want to miss anything prior to driving. Also when it comes to oiling what kind of oil do you use? I would think a higher viscosity oil/gear lub would be best but like I said this is new to me.

Thanks
Ron

A stock 24 will have cups for grease and flip top oilers for oil. A lot of folks use chainsaw bar oil in the oilers because it will last longer than motor oil. I know one veteran T guy who packs his Ford roller timer with Mobil red grease, and apparently it works for him. I have no experience with that, as I use New Day timers.

Do not put lubricant on the treads of the wheels, because then it will get on the track and on the locomotive wheels too. You can try lubricating the axle bearing points, but a locomotive should be able to pull cars without traction tires. Check to make sure all the wheels on your cars are free-rolling.

To add to what others have already said, if it has been in storage and not used for a long period of time, I would suggest you apply a light motor oil to anything that rubs, pivots, twists, or turns. That includes hood hinges, door hinges, door latches, carb linkages, timer linkages, hand brake paw, hand brake handle, etc, etc, etc.

The best data is in the Ford Manual that came with the cars originally. Don't pay attention to data from elsewhere.

I just oil every flip top and screw down about a turn on each grease fitting. Remember the ones under the front floorboard. Sometimes you can reach them from under the car without removing the floorboard. There is also one through the frame over each end of the parking brake cross shaft. I do this before each time I drive the T unless I drive it every day. Then Once a week if I drive every day for more than a week. Also remember to check the oil every day or every time you drive the car. It can creep down on you and cause engine problems. And a couple times a year the differential oil. If the differential leaks, check it more often.
