1924 Coupe Interior Photos

Post by Model T Ron » Sun Jan 22, 2023 11:11 pm

I am certain the package shelf can be removed to give more leg room. From the photos I have seen this would involve moving the gas tank back along with the seat riser and then reconstructing the seat back support. I know its not a project for everyone but at 6'3'' its worth the effort to get an additional 4 inches or so.

Any photos of the seats removed would be appreciated as the car is currently out of state.

Thanks
Ron

Thanks Rich
Is the metal support just back of the gas tank welded or bolted to the floor/frame? If this piece cannot be moved back I will need to look into relocating the gas tank to the trunk or shrinking down the tank. My hope is that it can be moved back allowing me 4" or so to push the gas tank back. Thank you so much for the photos.

Ron

Basically I am looking to remove the package shelf and push the seat riser back to get the leg room in the pre 1924 Coupe's that had the gas tank in the trunk. Thanks again for all your help as I will make this work.....little metal fab and wood construction is not going to stop me lol

I suspect the metal support just back of the gas tank is screwed or bolted. They didn't weld much of anything on these bodies. I don't have a picture of that area. Maybe someone else does.

The metal support just behind the gas tank is screwed in to the wood rear floor. There is NO welding anywhere on Model T bodies with wood construction.
If you’re determined to move the seat parts back remember you will need to fill in the wood floor section that you will leave open when it’s moved back. I’m 6’3” and if I wanted to move the the seat back farther my head would hit the rear window. That’s not for me. So I’ve accommodated myself in my 24 Coupe and for me it’s OK.

There is no wood flooring directly under the seat section on an original car and when it’s moved back and that section will be left open.

The photo that Rich shows of the front seat removed is someone’s long ago custom build that was added for the accessory transmission and it was filled in with wood to cover up the original open area.

Good luck with your endeavor to want to do this.

I have had several e-mails on this and it is possible to relocate the tank and seat back. Most of my 6'3'' height is in my legs so to me the juice is worth the squeeze.

Ron another thing to look for as an accessory is a fat man steering wheel. There are several types and most are not cheap but occasionally you can find one for around $300. It may actually let you use the driver side door. The one that flips over toward the passenger side will clear enough space for you to fairly easily use the door depending on how gravitationally challenged you are. If you look on eBay you can see what the different styles are available however those prices there are significantly higher than what you can find at swap meets or on the forum classifieds. Just a thought.

Best John

Thanks John
The car has a wood wheel that does not look stock but it has an original type center metal section so I am not sure if its a fat man (Car is out of State). Regardless my belly is not the issue as it's my long legs. I did sit in a pre 1924 Coupe a few years back with out the package tray and the gas tank in the trunk...... it had much more leg room than my 15 touring......When I find the leg room the package shelf is taking up in the 24 I will be very happy.

If the area where you will be driving is relatively flat, moving the tank back should not be a problem. If however there are steep hills you might consider some type of pressurization or fuel pump. Also keep the tank near full if driving on hills.
Other thing to do is make a trial seat position before you make anything permanent, because leg room still needs to be enough to push hard on the pedals for low, reverse, or stopping. Also check the arms reach to the steering wheel before you make anything permanent.

Thanks. I do plan on mocking everything up to insure it fits right before reassembly. As long as the body is the same length on the 24 and pre 24 Coupe it's not going to be an issue.
