Front Cover Mag Drive

Please look at pictures and comment on the oil tube that goes between the fill area and end of the drive. I'm thinking there would be very little oil mist that high to feed the drive. Would a drip oiler be better or maybe just grease. The tube is basically horizontal. Anyone running one for a long time? I also intend to leave the cam seal out, thoughts on that also.

Cam seal goes in a stock cover. This takes the cover's place - no cam seal.
I have one of these units on a stationary motor.
Leave the oil line on. Mist will provide the very little needed to lube the bushing.

I feel foolish mentioning the seal. Correct the seal is in the cover.

That oil tube connects the small oil reservoir in the filler neck to the shaft bushing. The reservoir will hold oil for quite a while, If the shaft and bushing are in good shape. I think I still have the drawings to make a new shaft and bushing…

It looks like it would be fairly simple to extend the horizontal tube into the oil fill area and then solder a 90 onto it. You could fill the line with an oil can any time you wanted.

Yes, i had forgotten. Inside the filler is a damed area that holds oil. The tube runs into it to feed oil to the bushing from that reservoir. I believe in practice this reservoir is automatically kept filled enough from the collected oil vapor. Its a self lubricating system.

The damn & trough design was very prevalent in engines and transmissions of many 20’s-50’s tractors. It was obviously very effective. I once watched a video of the oil mist inside a running Model A engine. It was a dense fog.

Not sure how much oil vapor would condense in the reservoir or splash up from the timing gears… but you can’t avoid getting some in there while topping off. I never saw mine empty after a drive. Wanna say there was a wick at the bushing end

When installing, watch the drive gear clearance. I had a few trimmed pan gaskets under the front plate to set the gear mesh
